  • Full Botanical Name: Syngonium 'Red Arrow'
  • Common Names: Red Arrow Arrowhead Vine
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Native to Central and South America
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Grows in tropical rainforests, typically in the understory, where it thrives in shaded areas with high humidity and well-draining, organic-rich soil.

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate low light, its vibrant red hues will be most pronounced with adequate light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, so it's best to keep it in filtered light.
  • Ideal Room: Ideal for living rooms, offices, or bathrooms with moderate to high humidity. It works well in containers, hanging baskets, or as a climber if supported, adding a touch of tropical greenery to any space.
  • Feeding: Fertilize once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer. Reduce feeding in the fall and winter months when growth slows.
  • Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. It will thrive in humid environments, such as bathrooms or kitchens, and benefits from occasional misting or the use of a humidity tray to maintain moisture levels.
  • Ideal Temperature: Best kept between 65°F and 75°F (18°C to 24°C). Protect from temperatures below 50°F (10°C), as it is sensitive to cold drafts and frost.
  • Watering: Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure the plant has good drainage and allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid letting the plant sit in water for extended periods.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Non-toxic to pets and children, making it a safe plant for homes with animals and young children.
  • Soil Type: Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix that retains moisture while allowing excess water to drain away. A mix designed for tropical plants or aroids works well for Syngonium species.
  • Propagation: Propagate by stem cuttings. Simply cut a healthy section of stem with at least one node, and place it in water or moist soil to root. The cuttings will root quickly and can be transplanted once established.
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Typically grows up to 3-4 feet (90-120 cm) tall with a spread of 1-2 feet (30-60 cm). It forms a compact, bushy growth habit and can also be trained to climb if given a support structure.
  • Growth Rate: Fast-growing. It will produce new leaves regularly during the growing season, but growth may slow down during the fall and winter months when the temperature drops.
  • Pests and Treatment: Generally pest-resistant, but may occasionally attract aphids, mealybugs, or spider mites. Treat infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap to keep the plant healthy.
  • Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is 1-2 inches larger than the current one and ensure it has good drainage to promote healthy root growth.
  • Pruning: Prune dead or yellowing leaves regularly to maintain a tidy appearance. Pruning can also help control the plant’s size and encourage fuller growth from the base.
  • Air Purification: Like many tropical plants, Syngonium 'Red Arrow' helps improve indoor air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, making it a beneficial addition to your home or office.
  • Folklore: Syngonium species are often associated with good fortune and prosperity. Their attractive foliage and ease of care make them a symbol of harmony and positive energy in various cultures.
