Spathiphyllum 'Sweet Chico', also known as the "Sweet Chico Peace Lily," is a compact variety of the well-loved Spathiphyllum. Known for its glossy, dark green leaves and elegant white spathes (the modified leaf that surrounds the flower), 'Sweet Chico' brings a touch of elegance to any space. Its smaller size compared to other Peace Lilies makes it perfect for smaller spaces or tabletops, while still offering the same air-purifying and aesthetically pleasing qualities that the species is known for. Ideal for both beginners and seasoned plant lovers, this plant adds both beauty and function to your home.

  • Full Botanical Name: Spathiphyllum 'Sweet Chico'
  • Common Names: Sweet Chico Peace Lily
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Native to tropical regions of the Americas
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Grows in shaded, humid areas of tropical rainforests with well-drained, organic-rich soil

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light levels. However, its growth may slow, and flowering may be reduced in low light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.
  • Ideal Room: Ideal for bedrooms, living rooms, or offices with indirect light. It thrives in areas with moderate humidity, making it well-suited for kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Feeding: Fertilize once a month during the growing season (spring to summer) with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer to support healthy growth and flowering.
  • Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity, which is typical for its native rainforest habitat. Misting the leaves or placing it on a humidity tray will help the plant thrive in dry indoor environments.
  • Ideal Temperature: Best kept between 65°F and 80°F (18°C to 27°C). It should be protected from drafts and temperatures below 50°F (10°C) as it is sensitive to cold.
  • Watering: Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Peace Lilies are sensitive to overwatering, so make sure the soil is well-draining, and always empty any excess water that collects in the saucer to prevent root rot.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Toxic to pets and children if ingested. Keep out of reach of animals and young children to prevent accidental consumption, which can cause irritation or digestive upset.
  • Soil Type: Use a well-draining, organic potting mix, such as one formulated for houseplants. A tropical mix with added perlite or orchid bark will provide the necessary drainage and moisture retention.
  • Propagation: Propagate by division. During repotting, separate the plant into smaller sections, ensuring each section has healthy roots and foliage. Replant each division in its own pot with well-draining soil.
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Typically grows up to 1-2 feet (30-60 cm) tall and 1-1.5 feet (30-45 cm) wide, making it a compact plant ideal for small spaces or tabletops.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate-growing. Spathiphyllum 'Sweet Chico' grows steadily during the growing season, producing new leaves and flowers, but generally grows at a slower pace than other larger peace lilies.
  • Pests and Treatment: Generally resistant to pests but may occasionally attract mealybugs, aphids, or spider mites. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil to keep the plant healthy.
  • Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is slightly larger than the current one to allow for healthy root growth and ensure the pot has drainage holes.
  • Pruning: Prune regularly to remove dead or yellowing leaves, and trim back any spent flowers. Regular pruning helps maintain the plant’s appearance and encourages new growth.
  • Air Purification: Known for its air-purifying qualities, Spathiphyllum 'Sweet Chico' helps remove toxins such as formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene from indoor air, improving air quality in your home or office.
  • Folklore: Peace Lilies are often associated with peace, tranquility, and positive energy. They are believed to bring calmness and harmony into a space, making them an excellent choice for places of relaxation or meditation.
