Meet the ‘Variegated’ Candle Plant—the geometric eccentric. With its chunky, joints-like stems washed in chalky blue-green and topped with rosettes of hot-pink and cream ivy-shaped leaves, it looks like a living cartoon. Weird, structural, and undeniably rare, it's here to bring a futuristic, sculptural edge to your collection.

  • The Formal Name: Curio articulatus 'Variegatus' (formerly Senecio articulatus)
  • The Nickname: Variegated Candle Plant / Sausage Cactus
  • Roots: A fascinating succulent selection derived from species native to the dry, rocky desert flats of South Africa.
  • Natural Vibe: Basking on hot, gravel plains where its fat, sausage-like segments hoard moisture against intense sun.

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Sunlight: Loves bright, direct light. Strong sun exposure triggers those neon hot-pink leaf tints and keeps the segments compact.
  • Best Room: A south-facing home office windowsill or a hot, sunny conservatory shelf.
  • Snacks: A highly diluted succulent fertiliser just once or twice during the spring active growing season.
  • Tropical Feels: Despises humidity. Requires a bone-dry, well-ventilated atmosphere to keep its chalky skin healthy.
  • Cosy Factor: Thrives in summer heat (18–30°C). Needs to stay above 10°C in winter and kept dry to prevent root issues.
  • Thirst: Extremely drought-resistant. Allow the mix to dry out 100% before watering, and significantly cut back in winter.
  • Safety First: Toxic – contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids; keep safely away from curious house cats, dogs, and small children.
  • The Bedding: An ultra-gritty, fast-draining substrate mix—at least 50% grit, pumice, or sand combined with standard soil.
  • Family Tree: Incredibly easy to propagate—simply snap off one of the "sausage" stem segments, let it callous, and press into sand.
  • Space Needs: Growth is upright then sprawling, creating an architectural cluster about 20–40 cm tall.
  • Speed: Steady but moderate grower, focusing its energy on building fat, succulent candle stems.
  • Uninvited Guests: Watch for mealybugs nesting at the base of the delicate leaf rosettes.
  • Moving Day: Enjoys a tight squeeze; only repot every 3 years in a shallow clay container with excellent drainage.
  • Haircut: None required; its jointed, segmented stems look best when left to ramble into a custom shape.
  • Fresh Air: A rugged succulent architecture piece that cleans the atmosphere while requiring almost zero attention.
  • Plant Lore: It drops its colorful leaves during high summer dormancy, relying purely on its thick green stems to photosynthesize.
