Schlumbergera (Mixed) is a vibrant assortment of holiday cacti known for their spectacular winter blooms in shades of red, pink, white, orange, and bi-colour forms. With arching segmented stems and jewel-bright flowers, these long-lived plants bring cheer and colour to the darker months. Easy-care and extremely rewarding, they’re perfect for bright windowsills and festive indoor decor.

  • Full Botanical Name: Schlumbergera × hybridus (mixed cultivars)
  • Common Names: Christmas Cactus, Holiday Cactus, Winter Cactus
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Cultivated hybrids; parent species originate from Brazilian cloud forests
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Epiphytic on trees and rocks in cool, humid mountain forests with filtered light and consistent moisture

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Bright, indirect light; avoid direct sun which may scorch or discolour leaf segments.
  • Ideal Room: Living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, or bright offices—north or east-facing windowsills are ideal
  • Feeding: Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring through early autumn with a diluted balanced fertiliser; use a bloom booster in autumn to encourage buds.
  • Humidity: Prefers moderate humidity (50–70%); thrive with occasional misting or near grouped plants.
  • Ideal Temperature: 18–24°C; cooler nights (12–15°C) in autumn help trigger flowering.
  • Watering: Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil is dry. Keep slightly more moist during flowering, but avoid overwatering.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Non-toxic (genus level) — safe for homes with pets and children.
  • Soil Type: Well-draining mix—cactus soil combined with perlite and a little orchid bark to mimic epiphytic conditions
  • Propagation: Very easy—root new plants from stem segments; allow pieces to callus for 24 hours before planting
  • Eventual Height and Spread: 20–30 cm tall; spreads 30–60 cm with arching stems
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; faster in warm, bright, stable environments
  • Pests and Treatment: May attract mealybugs or fungus gnats; treat with neem oil or gentle, plant-safe insecticides
  • Repotting: Every 2–3 years in spring; tighter pots often encourage better blooming
  • Pruning: Pinch or twist segments after flowering to encourage fuller, more compact growth
  • Air Purification: Good; provides subtle air-cleaning benefits and bright winter colour
  • Folklore: Holiday cacti are traditionally gifted during winter celebrations and symbolise joy, warmth, and long-lasting friendship due to their multi-decade lifespan
