  • Full Botanical Name: Schlumbergera × hybridus ‘Flame’ (mixed cultivars)
  • Common Names: Christmas Cactus, Holiday Cactus, Schlumbergera Flame
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Hybrid forms; parent species originate from Brazilian cloud forests
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Epiphytic on trees and rocks in cool, humid mountain forests with shaded light, constant moisture, and excellent airflow

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh direct sun which can bleach or mark the segmented stems.
  • Ideal Room: Living rooms, bedrooms, bright kitchens, or north/east-facing windowsills
  • Feeding: Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring–autumn with a diluted balanced fertiliser; switch to a bloom-boost formula in early autumn.
  • Humidity: Prefers moderate humidity (50–70%); thrives with regular misting or being grouped with other plants.
  • Ideal Temperature: 18–24°C; cooler nights around 12–16°C in autumn help trigger flowering.
  • Watering: Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil is dry. Keep slightly more moist during flowering but avoid waterlogging.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Non-toxic (genus level) — safe for homes with pets and children.
  • Soil Type: Well-draining mix such as cactus soil blended with orchid bark and perlite to mimic epiphytic conditions
  • Propagation: Very easy—root from stem segments; allow cut ends to dry for 24 hours before planting
  • Eventual Height and Spread: 20–30 cm tall; spreads 30–60 cm with arching stems
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; faster in warmer months with stable moisture
  • Pests and Treatment: Watch for mealybugs and fungus gnats; treat with neem oil or plant-safe insecticide
  • Repotting: Every 2–3 years in spring; prefers slightly snug pots for better blooming
  • Pruning: Pinch stems after flowering to encourage branching and fuller growth
  • Air Purification: Good; adds gentle greenery and seasonal colour while improving indoor air quality
  • Folklore: Often gifted during winter holidays, Schlumbergera symbolises hope, renewal, and lasting friendship thanks to its reliable seasonal blooms
