Rhipsalis ‘Red Coral’ is a striking epiphytic cactus known for its coral-like branching stems that blush red or orange under bright light. Its sculptural, sea-inspired form and soft, spineless texture make it a unique, easy-care favourite for modern interiors. Light, airy, and wonderfully architectural, it thrives in bright filtered light and adds a bold splash of colour to any space.

  • Full Botanical Name: Rhipsalis spp. ‘Red Coral’ (likely a colour-selected form of Rhipsalis cereuscula or Rhipsalis cassutha)
  • Common Names: Red Coral Cactus, Coral Mistletoe Cactus, Red Chain Cactus
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Tropical Central & South America (cultivar selected for red/orange pigmentation)
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Grows as an epiphyte on trees in warm, shaded forests with high humidity, excellent drainage, and dappled light

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Bright, indirect light. Strong light enhances red coloration, but avoid harsh direct sunlight which can scorch stems.
  • Ideal Room: Living rooms, bathrooms, kitchens, bright bedrooms, or hanging displays with filtered light
  • Feeding: Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a diluted cactus/succulent fertiliser.
  • Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity (50–70%); adapts well to normal household conditions.
  • Ideal Temperature: 18–26°C; protect from temperatures below 12–14°C.
  • Watering: Keep soil lightly moist but never waterlogged. Allow the top 2–3 cm to dry slightly before watering again.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Generally non-toxic (genus level) — safe for pets and children; stems are soft and spineless.
  • Soil Type: Airy, fast-draining mix—ideally an epiphytic cactus blend with bark, perlite, and a small amount of organic matter
  • Propagation: Very easy—propagate from stem cuttings; allow ends to dry briefly before rooting in soil or moss
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Trails 30–60+ cm; forms dense, coral-like clusters
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; faster in bright light and warm, humid conditions
  • Pests and Treatment: Watch for mealybugs and scale; treat with neem oil or cactus-safe insecticide
  • Repotting: Every 1–2 years in a shallow pot to refresh airy substrate
  • Pruning: Trim leggy or overlong stems to create a fuller shape; use cuttings for propagation
  • Air Purification: Good; helps freshen air and add natural softness to interiors
  • Folklore: Often associated with harmony and flow due to its branching, coral-like form that resembles ocean rhythms and natural movement
