Pot Size

Rebutia fabrisii is a small, attractive cactus species native to the highlands of Bolivia. Known for its bright, showy flowers, this cactus features a globular form with dense, spiny clusters that give it a rounded appearance. The plant blooms in spring with vibrant orange, red, or pink flowers that contrast beautifully with its spiny body. It is an excellent choice for cactus collectors and beginners due to its compact size and relatively low-maintenance care requirements.

  • Full Botanical Name: Rebutia fabrisii
  • Common Names: Fabris' Rebutia, Ball Cactus
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Native to Bolivia
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Grows in rocky, well-drained soils in arid, mountainous regions with full sun exposure and minimal rainfall

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Prefers bright, direct sunlight. It thrives in full sun and should be placed in a location that receives plenty of sunlight to encourage healthy growth and blooming.
  • Ideal Room: Suitable for sunny windowsills, patios, or outdoor cactus gardens. It can also be grown indoors in a bright location with sufficient natural light or under grow lights if sunlight is limited.
  • Feeding: Fertilize sparingly, once every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring to summer) with a diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer to promote healthy growth and vibrant flowers.
  • Humidity: Tolerates dry air and is well-suited for homes with low humidity, making it ideal for desert-inspired indoor environments.
  • Ideal Temperature: Best kept between 70°F and 85°F (21°C to 29°C). It can tolerate cooler temperatures but should be protected from frost to prevent damage.
  • Watering: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure that the plant has good drainage and never leave it sitting in water.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Non-toxic to pets and children, making it a safe plant for households with animals or young children. However, the spines can be sharp, so caution is needed when handling it.
  • Soil Type: Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix. A mix containing sand or perlite helps improve drainage and prevents water retention around the roots.
  • Propagation: Propagate by offsets or stem cuttings. Allow the cuttings to callus over for a few days before planting them in dry, well-draining soil to encourage rooting.
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Typically grows up to 6 inches (15 cm) tall with a spread of about 4-6 inches (10-15 cm), making it a compact and attractive succulent ideal for small spaces.
  • Growth Rate: Slow-growing. Rebutia fabrisii takes time to mature but will bloom once it reaches sufficient size, usually in the spring when provided with adequate care.
  • Pests and Treatment: Generally resistant to pests but may occasionally attract mealybugs, aphids, or scale. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil to prevent damage.
  • Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot with good drainage, and ensure the new pot is slightly larger to accommodate healthy root growth.
  • Pruning: Prune dead or damaged stems to maintain the plant’s appearance. Pruning is typically minimal, as this cactus grows slowly and retains its form for extended periods.
  • Air Purification: While not specifically known for air-purifying qualities, Rebutia fabrisii adds a beautiful and calming desert aesthetic to your space, making it a perfect decorative plant.
  • Folklore: Cacti, including Rebutia species, are often considered symbols of resilience and protection. Some cultures believe that cacti bring good luck and positive energy into the home, as they thrive in harsh conditions where other plants would not survive.
