Primulina yungfuensis is a beautifully compact, rosette-forming Gesneriad prized for its softly textured leaves and delicate tubular flowers. Its shimmering foliage—often patterned with gentle mottling—pairs perfectly with its elegant lilac-to-white blooms. Easy to care for and ideal for indoor displays, it thrives in moderate light and humidity, making it a wonderful choice for collectors of unique small-form houseplants.

  • Full Botanical Name: Primulina yungfuensis
  • Common Names: Yungfu Primulina, Chinese Violet (general family nickname)
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Guangxi Province, China
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Found on shaded limestone cliffs and moist, rocky slopes with filtered light, high humidity, and airy, fast-draining soil pockets

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Bright, indirect light. Tolerates lower light better than many houseplants but avoid direct sun which can scorch soft leaves.
  • Ideal Room: Living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, plant shelves, terrariums, or bright kitchens
  • Feeding: Use a diluted balanced or flowering houseplant fertiliser every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer.
  • Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity (50–70%); thrives near humidifiers or grouped with other plants.
  • Ideal Temperature: 18–25°C; avoid temperatures below 12–14°C.
  • Watering: Keep soil lightly moist. Allow the top 1–2 cm to dry before watering again. Avoid waterlogging, especially around the crown.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Generally considered non-toxic — safe for homes with pets and children.
  • Soil Type: Very airy, fast-draining mix such as African Violet soil with added perlite or pumice
  • Propagation: Leaf cuttings, offsets, or division of mature rosettes; roots readily in warm, humid conditions
  • Eventual Height and Spread: 10–15 cm tall; spreads 15–20 cm
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; grows steadily with the right humidity and light
  • Pests and Treatment: Watch for fungus gnats, aphids, or mealybugs; treat with neem oil or plant-safe insecticides
  • Repotting: Every 1–2 years in a shallow pot; avoid deep containers due to shallow root systems
  • Pruning: Remove faded flowers and older leaves to encourage continued blooming and fresh growth
  • Air Purification: Mild; appreciated mainly for its foliage and blooms
  • Folklore: As a member of the Gesneriad family, it is often associated with gentleness and renewal due to its soft leaves and elegant flowers
