Pot Size

Pinguicula, commonly known as Butterworts, are charming carnivorous plants prized for their colourful, succulent-like leaves that trap tiny insects with a sticky, glistening surface. Their compact size, bright rosettes, and delicate flowers make them perfect for windowsills and terrariums. Easy to care for when kept moist and bright, they offer both beauty and natural pest control.

  • Full Botanical Name: Pinguicula (genus level)
  • Common Names: Butterwort, Ping
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Widely distributed—species occur in North America, Central & South America, Europe, and Asia
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Found in nutrient-poor, boggy environments, rocky cliffs, mossy ledges, and damp forests; depend on insects to supplement nutrients

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Bright, indirect light. Some species tolerate gentle morning sun, but avoid intense midday sun to prevent leaf scorch.
  • Ideal Room: Bright kitchens, bathrooms, plant rooms, terrariums, or windowsills with filtered light
  • Feeding: No fertiliser needed—captures small insects naturally. You may offer tiny gnats or ants occasionally, but not required.
  • Humidity: Moderate humidity preferred; many Mexican species thrive in typical household humidity as long as watering is correct.
  • Ideal Temperature: 18–26°C for tropical/Mexican species; temperate species require cooler winters.
  • Watering: Use rainwater, RO, or distilled water only. Keep soil evenly moist during active growth. Many Mexican Pinguicula enter a dry winter dormancy and require much less water.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Non-toxic (genus level) — safe to touch; leaves are sticky but harmless.
  • Soil Type: Mexican species: airy mix of peat or coco coir with perlite, sand, or vermiculite. Temperate species: carnivorous plant mix (peat + perlite).
  • Propagation: Very easy—leaf pullings root readily; also possible from division and seed
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Typically 3–10 cm across depending on species
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; faster in warm, bright conditions
  • Pests and Treatment: Can attract fungus gnats or aphids; treat using carnivorous-plant-safe insecticides
  • Repotting: Every 1–2 years; handle gently as the leaves detach easily
  • Pruning: Remove dead leaves to prevent fungal issues
  • Air Purification: Low; valued mainly for insect-catching and ornamental appeal
  • Folklore: Historically believed to have magical healing properties—medieval Europeans used Butterwort leaves to curdle milk and soothe skin irritations
