Philodendron ‘Ring of Fire’ is a spectacular collector hybrid known for its wildly variegated, tooth-edged leaves that display a fiery blend of red, orange, yellow, cream, and green. Every leaf is uniquely patterned, making this plant one of the most dramatic and colourful Philodendrons available. Slow-growing but incredibly rewarding, it’s a true statement piece for any bright indoor jungle.

  • Full Botanical Name: Philodendron ‘Ring of Fire’ (hybrid—believed to be Philodendron wendlandii × Philodendron tortum)
  • Common Names: Ring of Fire Philodendron, Fire Philodendron
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Cultivated hybrid (parent species native to Central & South America)
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Parent species grow in tropical rainforest understories with warm temperatures, high humidity, and filtered light

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Bright, indirect light is essential for strong variegation. Avoid harsh direct sunlight which may scorch lighter leaf areas.
  • Ideal Room: Living rooms, plant rooms, bright bedrooms, or conservatories with ample space for its wide leaf display
  • Feeding: Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced aroid fertiliser. Avoid heavy feeding to protect sensitive variegation.
  • Humidity: Prefers 60–80% humidity; leaf colour intensifies in higher humidity.
  • Ideal Temperature: 20–28°C; protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 16°C.
  • Watering: Allow the top 3–4 cm of soil to dry before watering again. Avoid soggy substrates, as variegated Philodendrons are more prone to root rot.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Toxic (genus level) — contains calcium oxalates that are harmful if ingested.
  • Soil Type: Chunky, well-aerated aroid mix with bark, perlite, pumice, and coco coir
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings with visible variegation; slow to root but reliable with warmth and humidity
  • Eventual Height and Spread: 60–120 cm tall; leaves can spread widely as the plant matures
  • Growth Rate: Slow to moderate; variegation reduces growth speed compared to non-variegated Philodendrons
  • Pests and Treatment: Susceptible to spider mites, thrips, and mealybugs; treat quickly using neem oil or plant-safe insecticides
  • Repotting: Every 1–2 years; prefers slightly snug pots but benefits from fresh substrate
  • Pruning: Remove yellowing or overly shaded leaves; shape conservatively, as it produces fewer leaves per year
  • Air Purification: Excellent; provides strong air-cleaning benefits while adding high-impact colour
  • Folklore: Its fiery variegation has led collectors to consider it a symbol of creativity, transformation, and bold self-expression
