Philodendron melanochrysum is a beloved climbing aroid prized for its luxurious, velvety dark-green leaves that shimmer with golden undertones—hence its name, meaning “black gold.” With its elongated heart-shaped foliage and striking pale veins, this species is a true showstopper in any indoor jungle. Graceful, elegant, and dramatic, it is a must-have for collectors who love velvety Philodendrons.

  • Full Botanical Name: Philodendron melanochrysum
  • Common Names: Black Gold Philodendron, Melano
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Tropical rainforests of Colombia
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Grows as a climbing epiphyte on tree trunks in warm, humid forests with dappled light and consistent moisture

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Bright, indirect light; avoid direct sun which can scorch its delicate velvety leaves.
  • Ideal Room: Living rooms, plant rooms, conservatories, or any bright space with vertical support
  • Feeding: Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer using a balanced aroid fertiliser; reduce in winter.
  • Humidity: Prefers 60–80% humidity; higher humidity enhances the velvety texture and prevents crisping.
  • Ideal Temperature: 20–27°C; avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 16°C.
  • Watering: Water when the top 3–4 cm of soil feels dry. Keep lightly moist but never waterlogged—velvet-leaf Philodendrons are sensitive to root rot.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Toxic (genus level) — contains calcium oxalates that are harmful if ingested.
  • Soil Type: Airy, chunky aroid substrate with bark, perlite, pumice, and coco coir for excellent drainage
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings with a node; roots best with warmth, humidity, and optional bottom heat
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Climbs 1–2 metres indoors with support; leaves can reach 30–60 cm long in ideal conditions
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; speeds up significantly with a moss pole and good humidity
  • Pests and Treatment: Susceptible to spider mites, thrips, and mealybugs; treat promptly with neem oil or gentle insecticides
  • Repotting: Every 1–2 years; prefers tight pots but benefits from fresh, airy mix
  • Pruning: Remove yellow leaves and trim leggy vines; train upward on a moss pole to encourage mature leaf size
  • Air Purification: Excellent; filters indoor air while adding luxurious tropical flair
  • Folklore: Known as the “Black Gold” Philodendron, it symbolises elegance, protection, and hidden beauty due to its dark, shimmering leaves
