Philodendron Burle Marx ‘White Lava’ is an exceptionally rare variegated form of the classic Burle Marx, prized for its crisp white streaks, minty marbling, and dramatic sectoral patches across long, glossy leaves. The contrast between deep green and pure white creates a molten, flowing effect—hence the name “White Lava.” Compact, climbing, and highly ornamental, it’s a collector’s dream plant for bright modern interiors.

  • Full Botanical Name: Philodendron Burle Marx ‘White Lava’
  • Common Names: White Lava Philodendron, Variegated Burle Marx White, Burle Marx White Lava
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Cultivated variegated form; parent species native to Brazil and surrounding regions
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Parent species grows in warm, humid tropical forests as a creeping to climbing aroid under dappled canopy light

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Bright, indirect light is essential to maintain strong white variegation. Too little light reduces colour; harsh direct sun burns white areas.
  • Ideal Room: Living rooms, bright bedrooms, plant rooms, or conservatories with room for climbing or trailing support
  • Feeding: Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced aroid fertiliser; avoid overfeeding to prevent dulling variegation.
  • Humidity: Prefers 60–80% humidity; white variegated areas are more prone to crisping in low humidity.
  • Ideal Temperature: 20–28°C; protect from temperatures below 16°C.
  • Watering: Allow the top 3–4 cm of soil to dry before watering again. White-variegated Philodendrons are more sensitive to overwatering—keep moist, not wet.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Toxic (genus level) — contains calcium oxalate crystals, harmful if ingested by pets or humans.
  • Soil Type: Chunky, breathable aroid substrate with bark, perlite, coco coir, and pumice for optimal drainage
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings with visible variegation; root in moss, water, or soil with warmth and high humidity
  • Eventual Height and Spread: 60–120 cm tall indoors with support; leaves 20–35 cm long
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; slower than green Burle Marx due to reduced chlorophyll
  • Pests and Treatment: Potential for thrips, spider mites, and mealybugs—treat with neem oil or plant-safe insecticides
  • Repotting: Every 1–2 years; prefers a slightly snug pot but benefits from fresh, airy substrate
  • Pruning: Remove yellow or damaged leaves; train up a moss pole or trellis for stronger growth and larger leaves
  • Air Purification: Excellent; cleans indoor air while offering striking aesthetic appeal
  • Folklore: White-variegated Philodendrons are often considered symbols of clarity, new beginnings, and “light in the home,” reflecting their bright, luminous foliage
