  • Common Names: Blue Candle Cactus, Bilberry Cactus

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Requires very bright light and several hours of direct sun daily. South-facing windows or sunrooms are ideal.
  • Ideal Room: Bright conservatories, sunrooms, south-facing living rooms, greenhouses, or modern minimal interiors
  • Feeding: Feed with diluted cactus fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer. No feeding required in winter.
  • Humidity: Very dry air preferred; thrives in low-humidity indoor environments.
  • Ideal Temperature: 20–32°C in summer; tolerate down to 5–8°C in winter if kept dry (protect from frost).
  • Watering: Water deeply and allow soil to fully dry out between waterings. Water sparingly in winter.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Generally non-toxic (genus level), but spines pose a physical injury risk. Keep out of reach of pets and children.
  • Soil Type: Very fast-draining cactus mix enriched with grit, sand, and pumice for airflow
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings; allow cut surfaces to callus for 1–2 weeks before potting into dry cactus substrate
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Indoors 60–120 cm; outdoors (in habitat) up to 4–5 m with a wide, branching structure
  • Growth Rate: Moderate to fast for a cactus; notably quicker than many columnar species
  • Pests and Treatment: May attract mealybugs and scale insects; treat promptly with cactus-safe insecticides or neem oil
  • Repotting: Every 2–3 years or when it becomes top-heavy; choose a heavy pot to stabilise the vertical growth
  • Pruning: Minimal; remove damaged stems or shape slightly by cutting branches (allow to callus before replanting if propagating)
  • Air Purification: Moderate; known to help improve air quality, while bringing bold, sculptural visual impact
  • Folklore: In Mexico, mature plants of this species produce edible “bilberries,” once believed to bring strength and endurance to travellers
