Monstera obliqua (Leichtlinii) is an exceptionally delicate and highly sought-after species known for its incredibly thin, papery leaves and intricate fenestrations. Unlike the dramatic perforation patterns of the Peruvian form, Leichtlinii features softer, more subtle windowing and a lace-like texture. A true collector’s Monstera, it thrives in high humidity and stable warmth, rewarding careful growers with breathtaking foliage.

  • Full Botanical Name: Monstera obliqua (Leichtlinii)
  • Common Names: Obliqua Leichtlinii, Lace Monstera, True Obliqua Leichtlinii
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Central America (particularly Costa Rica and Panama)
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: An epiphytic climber growing on tree trunks in warm, shaded, extremely humid lowland forests with constant moisture and airflow

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight which can scorch the thin leaves.
  • Ideal Room: Humid plant rooms, greenhouse cabinets, terrariums, or bright bathrooms
  • Feeding: Light feeding every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a gentle, balanced aroid fertiliser.
  • Humidity: Extremely high humidity (80–95%) required for best growth; this species declines quickly in dry air.
  • Ideal Temperature: 22–28°C; avoid drafts and temperatures below 18°C.
  • Watering: Keep substrate lightly moist but never soggy. Allow the top 1–2 cm to dry slightly between waterings.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Toxic (genus level) — contains calcium oxalate crystals that are harmful if ingested by pets or humans.
  • Soil Type: Very airy epiphytic aroid mix with fine bark, perlite, pumice, sphagnum moss, and coco chips for constant airflow
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings with at least one node; requires high humidity and warmth to root successfully
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Vining growth that can climb 1–2 metres indoors with support
  • Growth Rate: Slow; one of the slowest-growing Monstera species
  • Pests and Treatment: Susceptible to thrips, spider mites, and mealybugs; treat gently with neem or aroid-safe insecticides
  • Repotting: Every 1–2 years; prefers small pots but benefits from fresh, airy substrate
  • Pruning: Minimal—trim only damaged leaves; encourage climbing for larger, more fenestrated leaves
  • Air Purification: Good, though valued far more for its rare and intricate foliage
  • Folklore: Considered a “holy grail” Monstera among aroid collectors—its fragile, lace-like leaves are said to symbolise rarity, patience, and dedication
