Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Monstera deliciosa can tolerate lower light conditions but will grow slower and produce smaller leaves. Avoid direct sunlight as it can scorch the leaves.
  • Ideal Room: Ideal for living rooms, offices, or bedrooms where it can receive plenty of indirect sunlight. Monstera deliciosa also thrives in bathrooms or kitchens with higher humidity levels.
  • Feeding: Fertilize every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer. Reduce feeding in the fall and winter months when the plant is dormant.
  • Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. Regular misting, placing it in a humid room, or using a humidity tray will help maintain the ideal moisture levels for healthy growth.
  • Ideal Temperature: Best kept between 65°F and 85°F (18°C to 29°C). Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F (10°C), as it is sensitive to frost and cold weather.
  • Watering: Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Monstera deliciosa prefers to dry out slightly between waterings, but avoid letting the plant sit in water for extended periods, as this can lead to root rot.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Toxic to pets and children if ingested. Keep out of reach of animals and young children to prevent accidental ingestion, which can cause digestive upset or irritation.
  • Soil Type: Use a well-draining potting mix with good aeration. A standard houseplant mix or an aroid-specific mix with added perlite is ideal for healthy root growth.
  • Propagation: Propagate by stem cuttings. Cut a healthy stem with at least one node and place it in water or well-draining soil to root. New roots should form within a few weeks.
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Typically grows up to 6-10 feet (1.8-3 meters) tall, with a spread of 3-5 feet (90-150 cm). It is an excellent plant for climbing or trailing in large containers or hanging baskets.
  • Growth Rate: Fast-growing in the right conditions. Monstera deliciosa produces large, impressive leaves over time and can quickly fill up a space if given enough light and care.
  • Pests and Treatment: Prone to mealybugs, aphids, and spider mites. Regularly inspect the leaves for pests and treat any infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
  • Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot with good drainage to promote healthy root growth and prevent water retention around the roots.
  • Pruning: Prune regularly to control size and shape. You can also prune leggy growth to encourage fuller growth and to keep the plant’s appearance neat.
  • Air Purification: Monstera deliciosa is known for its air-purifying qualities, helping to remove toxins like formaldehyde from the air, improving indoor air quality.
  • Folklore: In some cultures, Monstera plants are believed to bring positive energy and prosperity to the home. It’s often seen as a symbol of good luck, growth, and vitality, making it a popular gift for new homeowners.
