Meet Monstera adansonii 'Mint'—a sought-after variegated Swiss cheese vine with marbled mint, cream and green leaves. Each leaf has that classic adansonii shape with oval fenestrations, but the soft mint variegation makes every new leaf feel like a little reveal.

  • The Formal Name: Monstera adansonii 'Mint'
  • The Nickname: Mint Swiss Cheese Vine
  • Roots: A variegated form of Monstera adansonii, grown for its narrow, fenestrated leaves and pale mint-green marbling.
  • Natural Vibe: Tropical climbing aroid care: warm roots, bright filtered light, airy compost and something to climb.

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Sunlight: Bright indirect light is key. The pale mint sections have less chlorophyll, so they need good light to stay strong, but direct midday sun can scorch the variegation.
  • Best Room: A bright living room, warm office, plant shelf or cabinet. She is happiest somewhere warm and steady rather than beside a cold window.
  • Snacks: Feed lightly once a month in spring and summer with a diluted houseplant feed. Avoid overfeeding, as variegated plants can be slower and more sensitive.
  • Tropical Feels: Appreciates moderate to higher humidity. Dry air can lead to crispy edges, especially on the paler sections.
  • Cosy Factor: Keep warm, ideally 18–27°C, and protect from draughts or sudden temperature drops.
  • Thirst: Water when the top few centimetres of mix have dried, then let excess drain away. Keep evenly moist, not soggy.
  • Safety First: Not pet-safe – like other aroids, Monstera foliage can irritate mouths and stomachs if chewed.
  • The Bedding: Use a chunky aroid mix with bark, perlite and houseplant compost so the roots get moisture and airflow.
  • Family Tree: Propagates by node cuttings, but make sure each cutting has a healthy node and enough green tissue to keep growing.
  • Space Needs: Naturally wants to climb or trail. A moss pole or support will encourage larger, more mature leaves over time.
  • Speed: Slower than a plain green adansonii because the variegated leaves produce less energy, but steady in warmth and good light.
  • Uninvited Guests: Watch for thrips, spider mites and mealybugs around new growth and leaf backs.
  • Moving Day: Repot only when roots are filling the pot. Avoid jumping up too many pot sizes at once.
  • Haircut: Trim leggy vines just above a node to encourage bushier growth. Remove fully damaged leaves, but keep partly green variegated leaves if they are still feeding the plant.
  • Fresh Air: Likes gentle airflow, but avoid cold draughts and dry radiator heat.
  • Plant Lore: The fun is in the variation—new leaves can open with different levels of mint marbling, speckling and green from one leaf to the next.
