Pot Size

Mammillaria bombycina, commonly known as the "Bunny Ears Cactus," is a charming and unique cactus species native to Mexico. This small cactus is characterized by its cylindrical shape covered with soft, golden spines, which give it a furry, almost plush-like appearance, hence its nickname. In the spring, it produces delicate, pink or magenta flowers that bloom around the crown of the cactus, adding a splash of color to its otherwise subtle form. Its attractive appearance and compact size make it a popular choice for both beginner and seasoned cactus collectors.

  • Full Botanical Name: Mammillaria bombycina
  • Common Names: Bunny Ears Cactus, Plush Mammillaria
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Native to Mexico
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Grows in rocky, well-drained soils in desert regions, with full sun exposure and minimal rainfall

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Prefers bright, direct sunlight. Mammillaria bombycina thrives in full sun but can tolerate some partial shade, especially during extremely hot weather. However, too much shade may hinder flowering.
  • Ideal Room: Ideal for sunny windowsills, patios, or outdoor cactus gardens. It can also be grown indoors in a bright location with sufficient natural light or under grow lights if sunlight is limited.
  • Feeding: Fertilize sparingly, once every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring to summer) with a diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer to promote healthy growth and vibrant flowers.
  • Humidity: Tolerates dry air and is well-suited for homes with low humidity, making it ideal for indoor environments similar to its native desert conditions.
  • Ideal Temperature: Best kept between 70°F and 85°F (21°C to 29°C). It can tolerate cooler temperatures but should be protected from frost, which can damage the plant.
  • Watering: Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure the plant has good drainage and never leave it sitting in water.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Non-toxic to pets and children, making it a safe plant for homes with animals or young children. However, the spines can be sharp, so caution is needed when handling it.
  • Soil Type: Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix. A soil mix containing sand, perlite, or pumice helps ensure that water drains quickly, preventing water retention around the roots.
  • Propagation: Propagate by offsets or stem cuttings. Allow the cuttings to callus over for a few days before planting them in dry, well-draining soil to encourage rooting.
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Typically grows up to 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) tall with a spread of about 4-6 inches (10-15 cm), making it a compact cactus ideal for small spaces or containers.
  • Growth Rate: Slow-growing. Mammillaria bombycina takes time to mature but will bloom once it reaches a sufficient size, usually in the spring.
  • Pests and Treatment: Generally resistant to pests but may occasionally attract mealybugs or aphids. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil to prevent damage.
  • Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot with good drainage to ensure healthy root growth and avoid waterlogging.
  • Pruning: Prune dead or damaged stems to maintain the plant’s appearance. Minimal pruning is required, as the plant grows slowly and retains its form for an extended period.
  • Air Purification: While not specifically known for air-purifying qualities, Mammillaria bombycina adds an aesthetic touch to your home, contributing to a serene and natural environment.
  • Folklore: Like many cacti, Mammillaria species are thought to symbolize resilience and protection. Some cultures associate them with strength and endurance, as they thrive in harsh, arid environments where other plants struggle to survive.
