  • Full Botanical Name: Lophophora williamsii
  • Common Names: Peyote, Sacred Cactus, Mescal Button
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Mexico and Southwestern USA
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Semi-desert regions with limestone soils, strong sun, and extreme drought tolerance

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Bright, direct sunlight for most of the day; some protection from extreme midday sun
  • Ideal Room: Greenhouse, conservatory, or bright indoor windowsill
  • Feeding: Cactus fertilizer diluted to half strength during active growth (spring–summer)
  • Humidity: Low; thrives in arid air
  • Ideal Temperature: 20–35°C; keep above 10°C in winter
  • Watering: Water sparingly; allow soil to dry completely before watering again. Withhold water almost entirely during dormancy.

  • Soil Type: Very well-draining mineral mix with limestone chips or grit
  • Propagation: Seed propagation only (cuttings rarely successful)
  • Eventual Height and Spread: 2–5 cm tall; 5–10 cm wide
  • Growth Rate: Very slow; may take years to reach full size
  • Pests and Treatment: Mealybugs and root rot if overwatered; maintain good airflow and treat pests with neem oil
  • Repotting: Every 3–5 years or when the plant outgrows its container
