  • Common Names: Living Stones, Pebble Plants
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Southern Africa
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Dry, rocky deserts and sandy plains with extreme sunlight and minimal rainfall

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Full sun to very bright light; south-facing window recommended
  • Ideal Room: Sunny windowsill, greenhouse, or conservatory
  • Feeding: Rarely needed; if desired, use a diluted cactus fertilizer once a year
  • Humidity: Very low; prefers arid conditions
  • Ideal Temperature: 20–35°C; keep above 10°C and avoid excess moisture
  • Watering: Water sparingly — only when the plant begins to wrinkle; never water during winter dormancy or while new leaves are emerging
  • Pet/Child Safe: Non-toxic (genus level) — safe for pets and humans, though ingestion may cause mild digestive upset
  • Soil Type: Extremely well-draining mineral mix with sand, pumice, or perlite
  • Propagation: Seed propagation or careful division of mature clumps
  • Eventual Height and Spread: 2–5 cm tall; 2–4 cm wide per head
  • Growth Rate: Very slow
  • Pests and Treatment: Mealybugs and root rot if overwatered; treat with neem oil and ensure proper drainage
  • Repotting: Every 3–4 years; handle gently to avoid damage
  • Pruning: Not required; remove only dead leaf casings after new growth
  • Air Purification: Minimal; valued for ornamental and curiosity appeal
  • Folklore: Regarded as symbols of endurance and patience, surviving long droughts unnoticed in the desert
