Hoya Rangsan is a rare and beautiful variety of Hoya, known for its stunning clusters of star-shaped flowers and lush, waxy foliage. Native to Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand, this plant is highly regarded for its vibrant and fragrant blooms, which typically appear in shades of pink or white with a deep red center. Hoya Rangsan’s trailing vines and glossy leaves make it an excellent choice for hanging baskets or decorative containers, adding an exotic touch to any plant collection.

  • Full Botanical Name: Hoya Rangsan
  • Common Names: Rangsan Hoya, Thai Wax Plant
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Native to Thailand and other parts of Southeast Asia
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Grows as an epiphyte in tropical forests, where it thrives in shaded environments with high humidity and well-draining soil. It typically grows along tree branches or on rocks in the wild, benefiting from the filtered light that penetrates through the forest canopy.

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch its leaves, while too little light can cause it to become leggy and reduce its blooming potential. A spot with filtered sunlight or near a north or east-facing window is ideal.
  • Ideal Room: Ideal for living rooms, kitchens, or bathrooms with bright, indirect light and high humidity. It works well in hanging baskets or containers, where its trailing vines can cascade down elegantly.
  • Feeding: Fertilize once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer. Reduce feeding in the fall and winter months when growth slows.
  • Humidity: Prefers high humidity, typical of its native environment. Regular misting, placing it on a humidity tray, or using a humidifier will help maintain the moisture levels needed for optimal growth.
  • Ideal Temperature: Best kept between 60°F and 80°F (16°C to 27°C). Protect from temperatures below 50°F (10°C), as it is sensitive to cold drafts and frost.
  • Watering: Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure the plant has good drainage and allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid letting the plant sit in water for extended periods.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Non-toxic to pets and children, making it a safe plant for homes with animals and young children.
  • Soil Type: Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix that retains moisture while allowing excess water to drain away. A mix designed for tropical plants or aroids works well for Hoya species.
  • Propagation: Propagate by stem cuttings. Simply cut a healthy section of stem with at least one node, allow the cut end to callous over, and root it in water or moist soil.
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Typically grows up to 3-4 feet (90-120 cm) long, with a spread of about 1-2 feet (30-60 cm). It is a trailing vine that works well in hanging baskets or climbing supports.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate-growing. It produces new growth regularly during the growing season and blooms during late spring to summer, though blooming can be slow until the plant matures.
  • Pests and Treatment: Generally pest-resistant, but may occasionally attract mealybugs, aphids, or spider mites. Treat infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap to keep the plant healthy.
  • Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is 1-2 inches larger than the current one and ensure it has good drainage to promote healthy root growth.
  • Pruning: Prune dead or yellowing leaves regularly to maintain a tidy appearance. Pruning can also help control the plant’s size and encourage fuller growth and more flowers.
  • Air Purification: Like many tropical plants, Hoya Rangsan helps improve indoor air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, making it a great addition to your home or office.
  • Folklore: Hoyas, including Rangsan, are often seen as symbols of love and good fortune. Due to their beautiful flowers and pleasant fragrance, they are sometimes believed to bring joy and positive energy to the home.
