Hoya linearis is a unique and fascinating variety of Hoya known for its long, narrow, thread-like leaves that give it a delicate and graceful appearance. This charming vine is often referred to as the “String Hoya” or “Shooting Star Hoya” due to its trailing vines and star-shaped flowers. It’s a wonderful plant for those looking to add a distinctive texture and form to their indoor plant collection, thriving in bright, indirect light and humid conditions.

  • Full Botanical Name: Hoya linearis
  • Common Names: String Hoya, Shooting Star Hoya
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Native to Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand and Malaysia
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Grows as an epiphyte in tropical forests, where it receives dappled sunlight and thrives in high humidity

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate some low light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, reducing their vibrant color and causing them to curl or become discolored.
  • Ideal Room: Ideal for bright windowsills, hanging baskets, or on shelves where it can trail down elegantly. It thrives in kitchens, bathrooms, or conservatories where humidity is higher.
  • Feeding: Fertilize every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer. Reduce fertilizing during the fall and winter months when the plant is dormant.
  • Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity, making it well-suited for bathrooms, kitchens, or other humid spaces. Regular misting or using a humidity tray will help keep it healthy.
  • Ideal Temperature: Best kept between 65°F and 80°F (18°C to 27°C). Keep away from cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F (10°C), as it is sensitive to cold weather and frost.
  • Watering: Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Like other Hoyas, it prefers to dry out between waterings, so avoid overwatering. Reduce watering in winter when the plant is dormant.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Non-toxic to pets and children, making it a safe addition to homes with animals or young children.
  • Soil Type: Use a well-draining, tropical or succulent potting mix. A mix designed for aroids or orchids works well to ensure proper drainage and moisture retention.
  • Propagation: Propagate by stem cuttings. Take a healthy stem with at least one node, allow it to callous over for a few days, and then plant it in well-draining soil or water until roots develop.
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Typically grows up to 4-6 feet (1.2-1.8 meters) long, making it perfect for hanging baskets or as a trailing vine in larger containers.
  • Growth Rate: Slow-growing, but once established, it will gradually grow longer and produce new leaves and clusters of fragrant flowers.
  • Pests and Treatment: Generally pest-resistant but may occasionally attract mealybugs or aphids. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil to prevent damage.
  • Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot with good drainage and fresh soil to encourage healthy root growth and prevent water retention.
  • Pruning: Prune regularly to maintain a tidy appearance and control the plant’s size. Pruning also encourages fuller growth and helps to keep the plant looking its best.
  • Air Purification: Known for its air-purifying properties, Hoya linearis helps remove toxins such as formaldehyde and benzene from the air, improving indoor air quality.
  • Folklore: Like other Hoyas, Hoya linearis is thought to bring good fortune, positive energy, and good luck to its owners. It is also considered a symbol of love and affection, making it a popular gift plant.
