Meet 'Cumingiana'—the spicy, upright rebel of the Hoya world. Unlike her trailing cousins, she grows in a dense, shrub-like habit with small, lime-green leaves that smell like mango and cinnamon when they bloom. She’s a fragrant, bushy beauty that brings a unique, "spicy" vibe to any sunny shelf!

  • The Formal Name: Hoya cumingiana
  • The Nickname: Wax Vine or Mango Hoya
  • Roots: Native to the limestone cliffs and forests of the Philippines and Vietnam.
  • Natural Vibe: Scrambling over rocks and shrubs in bright, tropical environments.

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Sunlight: She loves bright, direct light. She is one of the few Hoyas that can handle a bit of sun, which encourages her spicy blooms.
  • Best Room: A bright kitchen or a sunny bedroom window.
  • Snacks: A weak liquid fertiliser every 4 weeks during spring and summer.
  • Tropical Feels: Quite happy with average home humidity, but loves good air circulation.
  • Cosy Factor: Happy between 20–30°C. She loves the warmth!
  • Thirst: Low thirst. Let the soil dry out 100% before watering. Her leaves are thick and succulent.
  • Safety First: Non-toxic – perfectly safe for curious cats, dogs, and children.
  • The Bedding: A very gritty, fast-draining mix—ideally a cactus mix with added orchid bark.
  • Family Tree: Extremely easy to propagate from stem cuttings directly in soil or water.
  • Space Needs: An upright, shrubby grower that reaches 30–60 cm before starting to trail.
  • Speed: A fast grower that rewards bright light with rapid, leafy stems.
  • Uninvited Guests: Watch for mealybugs in the leaf joints.
  • Moving Day: She has a small root system; repot only when she is literally falling out of her pot.
  • Haircut: Pinch the tips to encourage a bushier shape, but leave the flower peduncles!
  • Fresh Air: A hardy air purifier that adds a tropical, spicy scent to your home.
  • Plant Lore: She is named after Hugh Cuming, a 19th-century naturalist and plant collector who found her in the Philippines!
