Hoya clemensiorum ‘Dark Leaf’ is a highly sought-after collector Hoya, prized for its dramatic, deeply veined foliage and thick, elongated leaves. The dark emerald to chocolate-green tones, combined with pronounced white venation, give it a sculptural, almost reptilian appearance. Slow-growing but incredibly rewarding, it’s a true statement plant for serious Hoya enthusiasts.

  • Full Botanical Name: Hoya clemensiorum ‘Dark Leaf’
  • Common Names: Dark Leaf Clemensiorum, Veined Hoya
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Endemic to Borneo (Sabah, Malaysia)

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Bright, indirect light is essential. Avoid harsh direct sun which may scorch the darker foliage.
  • Ideal Room: Bright living rooms, bedrooms, plant rooms, or greenhouse cabinets where humidity is higher
  • Feeding: Feed with a balanced or calcium-rich fertiliser every 4 weeks during spring–summer; reduce in winter.
  • Humidity: Prefers 60–80% humidity; benefits from pebble trays, humidifiers, or placement in a cabinet.
  • Ideal Temperature: 18–28°C; protect from temperatures below 15°C.
  • Watering: Allow the top 2–4 cm of soil to dry before watering. Do not keep constantly wet—this species dislikes overwatering.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Non-Toxic (genus level) ..
  • Soil Type: Chunky, fast-draining epiphytic mix containing bark, perlite, pumice, and coco coir
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings (slow to root); bottom heat and high humidity improve success
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Long vining growth—vines can reach 1–2 metres indoors with support
  • Growth Rate: Slow; considered one of the slower-growing Hoyas due to its thick leaves
  • Pests and Treatment: May attract mealybugs, spider mites, and thrips; treat promptly with neem oil or Hoya-safe insecticides
  • Repotting: Every 2–3 years; prefers to be slightly root-bound
  • Pruning: Minimal—avoid cutting peduncles as this is where flowers rebloom
  • Air Purification: Moderate; thick leaves help filter air while adding bold texture
  • Folklore: Rare Hoyas like clemensiorum are often said to represent patience and dedication—traits mirrored in the slow, rewarding growth habit
