Hoya carnosa 'Freckles Splash' is a captivating cultivar of the Hoya carnosa species, renowned for its large, almond-shaped leaves of dark green that exhibit heavy splashing. This unique "splashing" is a silvery flecking caused by air getting trapped between the leaves, and it becomes most prominent when the plant is positioned in bright, indirect light. On rare occasions, 'Freckles Splash' blooms, presenting clusters of pale pink flowers with red centers. After blooming, it's advisable not to cut away the spent flower peduncles, as this variety is a rebloomer.

  • Full Botanical Name: Hoya carnosa 'Freckles Splash'
  • Common Names: Freckles Splash Hoya, Wax Vine
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Southeast Asia
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Prefers bright, indirect light and high humidity in tropical regions, often found growing on trees or rocks in shaded areas.

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while insufficient light may hinder growth and reduce the intensity of the marbling.
  • Ideal Room: Suitable for bright indoor spaces with ample natural light. Placing it near east or west-facing windows is ideal.
  • Feeding: Apply a diluted, balanced, water-soluble fertilizer during the growing season to promote healthy growth.
  • Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity levels. Consider placing the plant on a humidity tray or using a humidifier to maintain optimal conditions.
  • Ideal Temperature: Best kept between 60°F and 85°F (15°C to 29°C). Protect from frost and extreme cold temperatures.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Non-toxic to pets and children.
  • Soil Type: Requires well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix, to prevent water retention around the roots.
  • Propagation: Propagate by stem cuttings. Place cuttings in water or moist soil until roots develop.
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Can grow up to 5 meters in length in its native habitat, though indoors it remains more compact, with vines reaching several feet in length.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate growth rate; may take several years to reach full size.
  • Pests and Treatment: Watch for common pests like aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
  • Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Use a pot with drainage holes to prevent water accumulation.
  • Pruning: Remove dead or damaged leaves to maintain plant health and appearance.
  • Air Purification: Known to purify indoor air by removing toxins like formaldehyde.
  • Folklore: In some cultures, Hoya carnosa is believed to bring good luck and prosperity to its owner.
