Meet the ‘Black Dragon’—the midnight climber. With her dark, waxy leaves and clusters of nearly black, star-shaped flowers that smell like heaven, she’s the mysterious goth of the Hoya world. Seductive, rare, and undeniably cool, she’s here to turn your trellis into a dark floral masterpiece.

  • The Formal Name: Hoya 'Black Dragon' (Hoya pubicalyx selection)
  • The Nickname: Black Star Hoya
  • Roots: A selected cultivar of the Hoya pubicalyx, native to the Philippines.
  • Natural Vibe: Clambering through the tropical canopy, looking for a way to bloom in the light.

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Sunlight: Bright, indirect light. A bit of morning sun will help her produce those famous dark flowers.
  • Best Room: Hanging near a bright window where she has room to climb and trail.
  • Snacks: A high-phosphorus "bloom booster" fertiliser during the spring and summer.
  • Tropical Feels: Loves moderate humidity. Mist her occasionally to keep her waxy leaves happy.
  • Cosy Factor: Prefers 18–26°C. Avoid cold drafts, which can cause her to drop her flower buds.
  • Thirst: Let the soil dry out significantly between waterings. She’s very drought-tolerant.
  • Safety First: Pet-Friendly! Generally safe for cats and dogs.
  • The Bedding: An airy, well-draining mix—orchid bark, perlite, and soil.
  • Family Tree: Easily propagated via stem cuttings in water or damp perlite.
  • Space Needs: A vining plant that can trail for several metres if left unpruned.
  • Speed: A fast grower once established; she’ll quickly take over a trellis.
  • Uninvited Guests: Mealybugs love hiding in the flower clusters—keep a close eye out.
  • Moving Day: She loves to be root-bound; only repot when she’s literally bursting out of the pot.
  • Haircut: Don't snip off the "peduncles" (flower stalks)—she blooms from the same spot every year!
  • Fresh Air: A fragrant air-cleaner that adds a touch of mystery to your home.
  • Plant Lore: Hoyas are often called "Wax Plants" because of their thick, waxy leaves and flowers.
