Haworthia truncata, commonly known as the “Split Rock” or “Window Haworthia,” is a striking succulent that is native to South Africa. Its unique, boxy, translucent leaves are stacked tightly, giving it a distinctive appearance. The plant is slow-growing and produces small white flowers when mature. With its low-maintenance care requirements, Haworthia truncata makes a wonderful addition to succulent collections or as a standalone plant in a decorative pot.

  • Full Botanical Name: Haworthia truncata

  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Grows in dry, rocky environments with minimal water and full sun exposure

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate some direct sunlight. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the plant, so filtered light is ideal for optimal growth.
  • Ideal Room: Suitable for windowsills, patios, or any location with good light. This plant also does well in terrariums or glass containers that allow for proper sunlight exposure.
  • Feeding: Fertilize sparingly, once every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring to summer) with a diluted, balanced fertilizer designed for succulents.
  • Humidity: Tolerates dry air and is well-suited for homes with low humidity. It thrives in arid conditions similar to those of desert environments.
  • Ideal Temperature: Best kept between 60°F and 80°F (16°C to 27°C). Protect from temperatures below 50°F (10°C), as it is sensitive to cold weather.
  • Watering: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure that the pot has good drainage.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Non-toxic to pets and children, making it a safe plant for households with animals or young children.
  • Soil Type: Use a well-draining potting mix, such as a cactus or succulent mix. A mix containing perlite or sand will help ensure good drainage.
  • Propagation: Propagate by leaf cuttings or offsets. Allow the cuttings to callus over before planting them in well-draining soil to encourage root growth.
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Typically grows to about 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) tall and 4-5 inches (10-12 cm) wide, making it a compact plant that is ideal for small spaces.
  • Growth Rate: Slow-growing, especially when compared to other succulents. It can take several years to reach full size, but it can thrive for a long time with proper care.
  • Pests and Treatment: Generally pest-resistant but may occasionally attract aphids or mealybugs. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil to prevent damage.
  • Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that allows for proper drainage and provides enough space for growth.
  • Pruning: Prune dead or damaged leaves regularly to maintain the plant’s appearance. Trim any unwanted growth to encourage a more compact form.
  • Air Purification: While not known for air purification, Haworthia truncata adds a touch of nature and tranquility to any space, contributing to the overall ambiance of your home.
  • Folklore: Haworthia plants, including Haworthia truncata, are often believed to bring good luck and prosperity. Their compact size and beautiful structure are seen as symbols of longevity and resilience.
