Fittonia, often sold in mixed colour assortments, is a vibrant foliage plant adored for its striking veined leaves. Available in shades of white, pink, red, and even lime-green, these compact “nerve plants” add a bright splash of colour to terrariums, desktops, and small indoor displays. Their lush, low-growing habit makes them perfect for creating miniature jungle vibes indoors.

  • Full Botanical Name: Fittonia albivenis (various cultivars)
  • Common Names: Nerve Plant, Mosaic Plant, Fittonia
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Tropical rainforests of Peru and other parts of South America
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Found on humid, shaded forest floors with warm temperatures, rich soil, and high moisture levels

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Bright, indirect light. Too much sun scorches leaves; too little causes legginess and dull colour.
  • Ideal Room: Bathrooms, kitchens, terrariums, plant rooms, or low-light areas with good humidity
  • Feeding: Feed lightly every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a diluted balanced fertiliser.
  • Humidity: High humidity (60–90%) strongly preferred; perfect for closed terrariums or pebble trays.
  • Ideal Temperature: 18–26°C; avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C.
  • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy. Fittonia wilts dramatically when dry but usually recovers after watering.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Non-toxic (genus level) — safe for homes with pets and children.
  • Soil Type: Moisture-retentive but well-draining mix with peat, coco coir, and perlite
  • Propagation: Very easy—propagate from stem cuttings in water or directly in moist soil
  • Eventual Height and Spread: 10–15 cm tall; spreads 20–30 cm if allowed
  • Growth Rate: Fast in warm, humid conditions
  • Pests and Treatment: May attract fungus gnats or mealybugs in overly wet soil; improve airflow and treat with neem oil if needed
  • Repotting: Every 1–2 years; prefers shallow pots and evenly moist substrate
  • Pruning: Pinch back tips to maintain bushy growth and prevent legginess
  • Air Purification: Good; helps lightly improve indoor air quality
  • Folklore: Known for its “dramatic wilting act,” Fittonia has long symbolised sensitivity and resilience—able to bounce back quickly when cared for
