  • Full Botanical Name: Ficus shivereana ‘Moonshine’
  • Common Names: Moonshine Ficus, Variegated Ficus Shivereana, Shivereana Mint Ficus
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: India and Southeast Asia (variegated form is a cultivated selection)
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Parent species grow in warm, humid forests with dappled to bright filtered light, developing strong aerial roots and thick woody stems

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Bright, indirect light is essential to maintain crisp variegation. Can tolerate gentle morning sun but avoid harsh midday rays.
  • Ideal Room: Living rooms, bedrooms, offices, or plant rooms with bright windows; great as a statement plant in minimalist décor
  • Feeding: Use a balanced fertiliser every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer. Avoid overfeeding, which can reduce variegation.
  • Humidity: Prefers 50–70% humidity; adapts to normal household humidity but appreciates occasional misting or a nearby humidifier.
  • Ideal Temperature: 18–28°C; avoid cold drafts and never let temperature drop below 12–14°C.
  • Watering: Keep soil lightly moist but never soggy. Allow the top 2–3 cm to dry before watering. Overwatering may lead to leaf drop or root rot.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Toxic (genus level) — sap can irritate skin and ingestion may cause irritation in pets or humans.
  • Soil Type: Well-draining indoor plant or aroid mix with added perlite, bark, and coco coir to improve airflow
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings with rooting hormone; best done in warm, humid conditions
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Can reach 1–2 metres indoors with good light; naturally upright, bushy habit
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; faster in bright light and warmth but slower than non-variegated ficus varieties
  • Pests and Treatment: Sensitive to spider mites, thrips, and scale—inspect regularly and treat with neem oil or plant-safe insecticide
  • Repotting: Every 1–2 years; prefers a slightly snug pot but benefits from fresh soil
  • Pruning: Trim leggy stems to encourage branching; wipe leaves regularly to help photosynthesis
  • Air Purification: Good; helps freshen indoor air while adding a stylish, modern aesthetic
  • Folklore: Variegated Ficus varieties are often associated with harmony, prosperity, and clarity due to their light-toned, uplifting foliage
