  • Country and/or Region of Origin: South Africa

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Full sun to bright, indirect light; insufficient light causes leggy growth
  • Ideal Room: Conservatory, sunny windowsill, or greenhouse
  • Feeding: Cactus or succulent fertilizer once every 6–8 weeks during the growing season
  • Humidity: Low; prefers dry air
  • Ideal Temperature: 20–32°C; protect from frost below 10°C
  • Watering: Allow soil to dry fully between waterings; reduce drastically in winter
  • Pet/Child Safe: Toxic (genus level) — Euphorbia sap (latex) is poisonous and can cause severe skin and eye irritation, as well as vomiting and diarrhea if ingested by pets or humans
  • Soil Type: Very well-draining mineral cactus mix with sand or grit
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings after callousing; always wear gloves when handling due to toxic sap
  • Eventual Height and Spread: 20–40 cm tall; up to 60 cm wide
  • Growth Rate: Moderate to fast in strong light
  • Pests and Treatment: Occasionally mealybugs or scale; treat with horticultural oil
  • Repotting: Every 3–4 years in fresh, dry mix
  • Pruning: Minimal; remove old or damaged stems carefully
  • Air Purification: Limited, primarily ornamental
  • Folklore: The unusual form was said to resemble mythical Medusa’s hair, hence its name
