Epipremnum pinnatum 'Cebu Blue' is a unique and stunning variety of Epipremnum, known for its beautiful, silvery-blue foliage and trailing growth habit. Native to Southeast Asia, this variety stands out due to its narrow, elongated leaves that develop a striking blue-green hue as they mature. 'Cebu Blue' is a popular choice among plant enthusiasts due to its elegant appearance and low-maintenance care requirements. It thrives as a trailing or climbing plant, making it perfect for hanging baskets, shelves, or allowing it to cascade down from pots.

  • Full Botanical Name: Epipremnum pinnatum 'Cebu Blue'
  • Common Names: Cebu Blue Pothos
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Native to Southeast Asia, including the Philippines (Cebu Island)
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Grows as an epiphyte or ground cover in tropical rainforests, where it thrives in shaded environments with high humidity and well-draining, organic-rich soil.

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate some low light. The leaves will maintain their vibrant color and develop a more intense blue hue with sufficient light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while too little light can cause the plant to become leggy.
  • Ideal Room: Ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, or offices with bright, indirect light. It works well in hanging baskets or as a trailing plant in containers. 'Cebu Blue' also thrives in humid environments, making it suitable for bathrooms or kitchens with high humidity.
  • Feeding: Fertilize once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer. Reduce feeding in the fall and winter months when growth slows.
  • Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. It will thrive in humid environments like bathrooms or kitchens and benefits from occasional misting or placing it on a humidity tray.
  • Ideal Temperature: Best kept between 65°F and 80°F (18°C to 27°C). Protect from temperatures below 50°F (10°C), as it is sensitive to cold drafts and frost.
  • Watering: Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure the plant has good drainage and allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid letting the plant sit in water for extended periods.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Toxic to pets (cats and dogs) and children if ingested, so handle with care and keep out of reach of animals and young children.
  • Soil Type: Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix that retains moisture while allowing excess water to drain away. A mix designed for tropical plants or aroids works well for Epipremnum species.
  • Propagation: Propagate by stem cuttings. Simply cut a healthy section of stem with at least one node and place it in water or moist soil to root. Roots will develop quickly, and the cutting can be transferred to a new pot once established.
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Typically grows up to 6-8 feet (1.8-2.4 meters) in height and can spread up to 2-3 feet (60-90 cm) in width. It is a fast-growing plant, especially when provided with ample light and humidity.
  • Growth Rate: Fast-growing. It produces new growth regularly during the warmer months but will slow down during the fall and winter months when the plant is dormant.
  • Pests and Treatment: Generally pest-resistant, but may occasionally attract mealybugs, aphids, or spider mites. Treat infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap to keep the plant healthy.
  • Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is 1-2 inches larger than the current one and ensure it has good drainage to promote healthy root growth.
  • Pruning: Prune dead or yellowing leaves regularly to maintain a tidy appearance. Pruning can also help control the plant’s size and encourage fuller growth from the base.
  • Air Purification: Like many tropical plants, Epipremnum pinnatum 'Cebu Blue' helps improve indoor air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, making it a beneficial addition to your home or office.
  • Folklore: Epipremnum species are often considered symbols of good luck and prosperity. Their resilience and easy care make them a popular choice in various cultures, where they are believed to bring positive energy and protection to the home.
