Meet the Rainbow Hedgehog Cactus—the desert’s most vibrant showstopper. With her cylindrical frame and bands of pink, red, and yellow spines, she looks like she’s wearing a designer knit sweater. She’s small, slow-growing, and blooms with massive, neon-pink flowers that definitely know how to make an entrance!

  • The Formal Name: Echinocereus rigidissimus
  • The Nickname: Rainbow Hedgehog Cactus or Arizona Rainbow Cactus
  • Roots: A sun-drenched native of the Sonoran Desert, specifically Arizona, New Mexico, and Northern Mexico.
  • Natural Vibe: Thriving on rocky, south-facing limestone slopes and high-elevation grasslands.

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Sunlight: She is a total sun-worshipper. Give her at least 6–8 hours of direct full sun to keep her spine colours vibrant.
  • Best Room: A south-facing windowsill or a bright, airy sunroom.
  • Snacks: A diluted, low-nitrogen cactus fertiliser once a month in spring and summer.
  • Tropical Feels: Keep it dry! She hates humidity—aim for a desert-like 10–30% if possible.
  • Cosy Factor: Loves it warm (21–32°C) but is surprisingly hardy; she can handle a dry chill down to -12°C.
  • Thirst: Water thoroughly only when the soil is bone-dry. In winter, stop watering entirely to let her rest.
  • Safety First: Non-toxic – safe for pets and kids, but those rigid spines will definitely prick curious fingers!
  • The Bedding: A gritty, sharply draining cactus mix with plenty of perlite, sand, or gravel.
  • Family Tree: Primarily propagated via seeds, as she rarely produces offsets or "pups."
  • Space Needs: A petite queen, reaching about 15–30 cm in height and 11 cm in width.
  • Speed: Very slow and steady. She takes 5–10 years to reach her full, fabulous height.
  • Uninvited Guests: Watch out for mealybugs hiding between her spines or root rot from overwatering.
  • Moving Day: Rarely needed! Repot every 2–3 years only if she truly outgrows her space.
  • Haircut: No pruning required, though you can snip off withered flowers after they fade.
  • Fresh Air: While she isn't a leafy giant, she's a resilient survivor that brings life to arid spaces.
  • Plant Lore: Her multi-coloured bands are like rings of a tree, each representing a year’s growth and resilience.
