Echeveria setosa is a charming, fuzzy-leaved succulent known for its spherical rosettes covered in fine white hairs. These soft, tactile trichomes give it a unique, velvety appearance while helping the plant thrive in bright, dry environments. Compact, cute, and easy to care for, it’s a delightful addition to any sunny succulent collection.

  • Full Botanical Name: Echeveria setosa
  • Common Names: Mexican Firecracker, Fuzzy Echeveria
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Puebla, Mexico
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Found on rocky hillsides with intense sunlight, low rainfall, and excellent drainage; hairy leaves protect from sun and water loss

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Bright light with at least 4 hours of direct sun for compact, dense growth. Too little light causes stretching.
  • Ideal Room: South or west-facing windowsills, bright kitchens, conservatories, or sunny offices
  • Feeding: Light feeding every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with diluted succulent fertiliser.
  • Humidity: Low humidity preferred; high humidity may cause fungal issues on the fuzzy leaves.
  • Ideal Temperature: 18–28°C; protect from frost and temperatures below 8–10°C.
  • Watering: Allow soil to dry completely between watering; water sparingly in winter. Avoid getting water on the fuzzy leaves.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Generally non-toxic (genus level), but ingestion may cause mild stomach upset.
  • Soil Type: Fast-draining cactus/succulent mix with extra perlite or pumice
  • Propagation: Easily propagated from offsets (pups); leaf propagation possible but slower due to fuzzy surface
  • Eventual Height and Spread: 5–10 cm tall; rosettes typically 8–12 cm across and form clumps over time
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; speeds up in warm, sunny conditions
  • Pests and Treatment: May attract mealybugs or aphids; treat with succulent-safe insecticide or neem oil
  • Repotting: Every 1–2 years; prefers shallow pots to suit its fibrous roots
  • Pruning: Remove dried lower leaves and spent flower stems; handle gently to protect the leaf hairs
  • Air Purification: Mild; mainly valued for its unique texture and cheerful appearance
  • Folklore: Nicknamed the “Mexican Firecracker” for its bright red-yellow blooms that appear in spring and summer, symbolising bursts of colour and vitality
