Dischidia platyphylla, also known as the "Paddle-leaf Vine", "Shingle Plant","String of Coins" or "Dollar Plant," is a unique and attractive succulent vine that is recognized for its fleshy, rounded leaves that grow in clusters, resembling coins. This epiphytic plant is native to Southeast Asia and is often found growing in the humid forests of the region. Its trailing vines and striking foliage make it an interesting addition to hanging baskets, shelves, or as a decorative hanging plant.

  • Full Botanical Name: Dischidia platyphylla
  • Common Names: Paddle-leaf Vine, Shingle Plant, String of Coins, Dollar Plant, Fishbone Plant
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Native to Southeast Asia, particularly in Malaysia and Indonesia
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Grows as an epiphyte in humid tropical forests, typically found hanging from trees with access to indirect light and moist conditions

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate some moderate shade. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, so it’s best to place it in a well-lit spot with filtered light.
  • Ideal Room: Suitable for living rooms, bathrooms, or kitchens where humidity levels are higher. The trailing vines also make it a perfect plant for hanging baskets or shelves.
  • Feeding: Fertilize once every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring to summer) with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer to encourage healthy growth.
  • Humidity: Thrives in high humidity, making it ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, or a humidity-controlled room. Misting the leaves regularly or using a humidity tray can help maintain the necessary moisture levels.
  • Ideal Temperature: Best kept between 65°F and 80°F (18°C to 27°C). It is sensitive to frost, so protect it from temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
  • Watering: Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry. Avoid overwatering, as this can cause root rot. The plant prefers to dry out between waterings but should not be left to completely dry out for extended periods.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Non-toxic to pets and children, making it a safe option for households with animals or young children.
  • Soil Type: Use a well-draining potting mix, such as a cactus or succulent mix. The mix should provide good aeration and moisture retention without becoming waterlogged.
  • Propagation: Propagate by stem cuttings or by dividing the plant during repotting. Allow cuttings to callus over for a few days before placing them in soil to encourage rooting.
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Typically grows up to 2-3 feet (60-90 cm) long with a spread of 1-2 feet (30-60 cm), making it perfect for hanging baskets or as a trailing plant on shelves.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate to fast-growing. It tends to grow quickly during the warmer months and can easily be propagated to extend its reach.
  • Pests and Treatment: Watch for pests such as aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites, which can affect the plant’s health. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
  • Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot with good drainage, and always use a well-draining mix to prevent water retention at the roots.
  • Pruning: Prune to remove dead or damaged stems and leaves, which will also encourage denser growth. The trailing nature of the plant allows for regular trimming to shape the vines.
  • Air Purification: While not primarily known for air-purifying properties, Dischidia platyphylla can contribute to a cleaner, more positive atmosphere by creating a vibrant, natural look in your indoor space.
  • Folklore: The "String of Coins" or "Dollar Plant" is often associated with wealth and prosperity. Some cultures believe that keeping this plant in the home brings good fortune and financial success.
