Meet Dionaea muscipula—the famous Venus flytrap with quick-closing traps instead of ordinary leaves. Sensitive trigger hairs inside each paired trap help it close around moving prey. The traps can blush red in good light and older ones naturally blacken after doing their job.

  • The Formal Name: Dionaea muscipula
  • The Nickname: Venus Flytrap
  • Roots: Native to a small area of nutrient-poor wetland in North and South Carolina, USA.
  • Natural Vibe: Very bright sunshine, pure water and a genuine cool winter rest—not a tropical terrarium.

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Sunlight: Full sun or the brightest practical position, acclimatising gradually to intense midday light.
  • Best Room: Sunny windowsill, conservatory or sheltered outdoor spot; give a cooler, light winter resting place.
  • Snacks: No fertiliser, meat or manual feeding needed; do not repeatedly trigger traps for fun.
  • Tropical Feels: Ordinary humidity is acceptable if the pot stays correctly watered and air can circulate.
  • Cosy Factor: Active in spring/summer; give a cool winter dormancy with protection from hard container freezes.
  • Thirst: Use rainwater, distilled or reverse-osmosis water. Keep a shallow water tray during active growth; in winter keep the compost moist but less saturated.
  • Safety First: Keep out of reach of inquisitive pets to protect the delicate traps; avoid ingestion.
  • The Bedding: Specialist low-nutrient, acidic carnivorous mix or sustainably sourced sphagnum; never enriched potting compost.
  • Family Tree: Mature multi-crown plants can be divided in spring; also grown from seed.
  • Space Needs: Compact rosette but allow plenty of light and space around the traps.
  • Speed: Produces fresh traps in the growing season and slows or dies back in winter.
  • Uninvited Guests: Look for aphids around emerging growth; never spray harsh products into traps.
  • Moving Day: Repot into fresh specialist compost in spring if needed.
  • Haircut: Remove traps only once completely black; do not cut healthy green leaves.
  • Fresh Air: Fresh airflow reduces stagnant conditions in cool weather.
  • Plant Lore: The plant needs repeated trigger-hair stimulation to distinguish living prey from a stray raindrop.
