Meet Cymbidium—the elegant orchid with a fountain of slender strap-like leaves and impressive long-lasting sprays of flowers. This is a mixed-colour selection, so bloom colours can vary from plant to plant, and no particular named cultivar is promised. Unlike many warm-growing indoor orchids, Cymbidiums benefit from bright light and a distinct cooler-night spell to help them flower again.

  • The Formal Name: Cymbidium hybrid (mixed colours; cultivar unspecified)
  • The Nickname: Cymbidium / Boat Orchid
  • Roots: Cultivated Cymbidium hybrids descend from Asian and Australasian orchid species that grow in varied forest and mountain habitats.
  • Natural Vibe: A bright, airy orchid position with seasonal temperature changes and roots in coarse orchid bark.

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Sunlight: Give bright filtered light year-round; protect foliage from strong summer midday sun.
  • Best Room: A cool bright conservatory or well-lit room is ideal, rather than a constantly hot radiator-side position.
  • Snacks: Use a dilute orchid fertiliser regularly during active growth, reducing feeding in winter; flush the pot with plain water periodically.
  • Tropical Feels: Moderate humidity with moving air suits Cymbidiums; avoid stagnant, wet conditions around the crown.
  • Cosy Factor: Aim for 10–24°C. A cooler late-summer/autumn night period, roughly 10–14°C when practical, encourages flower spikes; always keep frost-free.
  • Thirst: Water thoroughly in spring and summer when the bark approaches dry at the surface, then drain. Reduce in the cooler months without allowing established pseudobulbs to shrivel severely.
  • Safety First: Orchids are not intended for eating; position out of reach of inquisitive pets and children.
  • The Bedding: Use a free-draining bark-based orchid mix, never dense ordinary houseplant compost.
  • Family Tree: Divide a mature clump after flowering, retaining several healthy pseudobulbs and substantial roots on each section.
  • Space Needs: Allow a clear area above the pot for upright flower stems; support heavy spikes if necessary.
  • Speed: New leafy pseudobulbs appear through the active season; blooming depends strongly on light and cooler nights.
  • Uninvited Guests: Watch for scale, mealybugs and spider mites on leaf bases and emerging spikes.
  • Moving Day: Refresh decaying orchid bark every couple of years, preferably after flowering when new roots begin.
  • Haircut: Cut spent flower spikes at the base; keep firm green pseudobulbs to power future flowering.
  • Fresh Air: Regular fresh air helps prevent stagnant, damp conditions; a sheltered outdoor summer stay can encourage flowering.
  • Plant Lore: A noticeable difference between warm days and cooler nights is often the missing ingredient for reblooming indoors.
