Cylindropuntia imbricata, also known as the Teddy Bear Cholla, is a striking cactus species native to the deserts of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. This cactus is characterized by its cylindrical, jointed stems covered in dense, spiny clusters that resemble a teddy bear's fur. Despite its soft appearance, the spines are actually very sharp and can easily detach from the plant. The plant produces vibrant yellow or greenish flowers in the spring, adding a splash of color to its otherwise intimidating form.

  • Full Botanical Name: Cylindropuntia imbricata
  • Common Names: Teddy Bear Cholla, Tree Cholla
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Native to the deserts of the southwestern United States, particularly in Arizona and Mexico
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Grows in dry, arid soils with full sun exposure in rocky or sandy desert environments

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Prefers full sunlight. The Teddy Bear Cholla thrives in bright, direct sunlight, which encourages robust growth and vibrant flowering.
  • Ideal Room: Suitable for sunny windowsills, patios, or outdoor cactus gardens in dry, warm climates. It can also be grown indoors in a sunny spot or under grow lights if sunlight is limited.
  • Feeding: Fertilize sparingly, once every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring to summer) with a diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer.
  • Humidity: Tolerates dry air and is ideal for homes with low humidity, mimicking its native desert environment.
  • Ideal Temperature: Best kept between 70°F and 85°F (21°C to 29°C). It is cold-hardy to around 20°F (-6°C) but should be protected from freezing temperatures.
  • Watering: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure the pot has good drainage and never let it sit in standing water.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Toxic to pets and children if ingested. The plant's spines can detach easily and cause injury, so caution is needed when handling it.
  • Soil Type: Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix. A soil mix containing sand or perlite will help ensure proper drainage and prevent the roots from becoming waterlogged.
  • Propagation: Propagate by stem cuttings or offsets. Allow the cuttings to callus over for a few days before planting them in dry, well-draining soil to encourage rooting.
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Typically grows up to 5-6 feet (1.5-2 meters) tall, with a spread of 2-3 feet (60-90 cm), making it a medium to large-sized cactus.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate growth rate. It may take a few years to reach its full height, but it can grow steadily during the warmer months with proper care.
  • Pests and Treatment: Generally resistant to pests, but watch for mealybugs or aphids. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil to prevent damage.
  • Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot with good drainage, and ensure the new pot is slightly larger to allow for healthy root growth.
  • Pruning: Prune dead or damaged stems to maintain the plant’s appearance. The plant can also be pruned to encourage new growth and a more compact form.
  • Air Purification: While not specifically known for air-purifying qualities, Cylindropuntia imbricata adds a unique desert-like aesthetic to any home, making it an interesting focal point in interior decor.
  • Folklore: Cacti, including Cylindropuntia species, are often seen as symbols of resilience and endurance. In some cultures, they represent strength and protection, thriving in harsh environments where other plants would not survive.
