Crassula ovata Variegata, commonly known as the Variegated Jade Plant, is a stunning succulent variety with unique, variegated green and creamy white leaves. Native to South Africa, this plant is a popular choice for collectors due to its attractive, colorful foliage and easy care. The fleshy, round leaves are thick and glossy, making it a perfect low-maintenance plant for bright indoor spaces. As it matures, Crassula ovata Variegata can develop a small tree-like shape, making it a great addition to succulent arrangements or as a statement plant in your home.

  • Full Botanical Name: Crassula ovata Variegata
  • Common Names: Variegated Jade Plant, Money Tree
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Native to South Africa
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Grows in dry, rocky regions with well-draining soil, where it thrives in warm temperatures with minimal rainfall.

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, but too much can cause the variegation to fade. A sunny windowsill is an ideal spot, but be sure to protect the plant from harsh afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch.
  • Ideal Room: Ideal for living rooms, offices, or patios with ample light. It also works well in containers and hanging baskets, making it perfect for small spaces or succulent displays.
  • Feeding: Fertilize sparingly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer. Over-fertilizing can lead to weak growth, so it's best to fertilize every 6-8 weeks. Reduce feeding in the fall and winter months when growth slows.
  • Humidity: Prefers low humidity, typical of its native environment. It will thrive in average household humidity levels and requires no extra moisture in the air.
  • Ideal Temperature: Best kept between 60°F and 75°F (16°C to 24°C). Protect from temperatures below 50°F (10°C), as it is sensitive to frost and cold drafts.
  • Watering: Water when the soil is completely dry. As a succulent, Crassula ovata Variegata is drought-tolerant and prefers to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure the pot has good drainage.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Non-toxic to pets and children, making it a safe plant for homes with animals and young children.
  • Soil Type: Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix. A mix designed for cacti will allow the soil to dry quickly and prevent root rot.
  • Propagation: Propagate by leaf or stem cuttings. Simply take a healthy cutting, allow the cut end to callous for a few days, and plant it in dry soil to root. It can also be propagated by division.
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Typically grows up to 2-3 feet (60-90 cm) tall with a spread of about 1-2 feet (30-60 cm). It forms a small tree-like shape with thick, rounded leaves and can be pruned to maintain a compact form.
  • Growth Rate: Slow-growing. It produces new growth during the warmer months, but it will need little attention in the winter months when growth slows.
  • Pests and Treatment: Generally pest-resistant, but may occasionally attract mealybugs, aphids, or spider mites. Treat infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap to keep the plant healthy.
  • Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is 1-2 inches larger than the current one and ensure it has good drainage to promote healthy root growth.
  • Pruning: Prune dead or damaged leaves regularly to maintain a clean appearance. Pruning can also help control the plant’s size and encourage bushier growth.
  • Air Purification: Like many succulents, Crassula ovata Variegata helps improve indoor air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, making it a beneficial addition to your home or office.
  • Folklore: Crassula species, particularly Crassula ovata, are commonly known as "Money Trees" and are believed to bring good luck and prosperity. Their resilience and popularity in Feng Shui make them symbols of wealth and success.
