Pot Size

Meet Crassula ovata—the glossy-leaved jade plant that gradually grows into a miniature succulent tree. Plump, coin-shaped green leaves sit on branching stems that become woodier with age. Given plenty of light, leaf edges may take on a lovely reddish blush, making this a timeless windowsill favourite.

  • The Formal Name: Crassula ovata
  • The Nickname: Jade Plant
  • Roots: Native to southern Africa; adapted to storing water in its leaves and stems.
  • Natural Vibe: Sunny, airy and on the dry side between drinks—not a humidity-loving jungle plant.

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Sunlight: Bright light, including several hours of gentle sun once acclimatised; rotate the pot for even branching.
  • Best Room: A bright south- or west-facing windowsill, sheltered from cold glass and draughts.
  • Snacks: A diluted cactus/succulent feed monthly in spring and summer; none in winter.
  • Tropical Feels: Normal household humidity is ideal; no misting needed.
  • Cosy Factor: Comfortable at normal room temperatures; keep above roughly 10°C and away from frost.
  • Thirst: Water thoroughly only after the compost has dried, then drain completely. Reduce watering substantially in winter; soft leaves and permanently damp soil are warning signs.
  • Safety First: Jade plants are toxic to cats and dogs if eaten; display out of reach.
  • The Bedding: A free-draining peat-free cactus mix with extra grit or perlite, in a pot with drainage.
  • Family Tree: Allow stem cuttings to callus before potting; healthy leaves may also root.
  • Space Needs: Slowly forms a branching, upright succulent shrub; prune to keep it compact.
  • Speed: Steady but slow, especially through the UK winter.
  • Uninvited Guests: Check leaf joints for mealybugs and stems for scale insects.
  • Moving Day: Repot when clearly root-bound, ideally in spring, just one pot size up.
  • Haircut: Pinch or trim long stems in spring to encourage a fuller, tree-like shape.
  • Fresh Air: Enjoys normal ventilation; avoid cold winter draughts.
  • Plant Lore: Often called the money plant or friendship tree, jade plants are treasured for their long-lived, sculptural growth.
