Pot Size

Meet Colocasia 'Pharaohs Mask'—a tiny start of one of the most dramatic elephant ears, famous for leaves with raised, dark vein patterning like a carved mask. At this size it needs warmth and patience, but the mature foliage is properly theatrical.

  • The Formal Name: Colocasia 'Pharaohs Mask' ('Cophama')
  • The Nickname: Pharaohs Mask Elephant Ear
  • Roots: A patented Colocasia cultivar also sold as Pharaohs Mask, selected for raised dark veins and ornamental leaf structure.
  • Natural Vibe: Warm, humid, moisture-loving tropical growth with rich compost and no cold checks.

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Sunlight: Bright filtered light is best. Stronger light improves colour, but direct midday sun can scorch young leaves.
  • Best Room: Start in a warm cabinet or grow-light area; mature plants need a bright warm corner with space.
  • Snacks: Feed regularly once growing strongly; large-leaf Colocasia are hungry.
  • Tropical Feels: Enjoys humidity, especially while unfurling patterned leaves.
  • Cosy Factor: Keep warm, ideally above 18°C, and never expose to frost or cold draughts.
  • Thirst: Keep evenly moist during growth. It is thirstier than many houseplants, but still needs drainage.
  • Safety First: Not pet-safe – aroid foliage contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals, so keep away from pets and children who may chew leaves or stems.
  • The Bedding: Rich, moisture-holding compost with aeration; do not use a dry cactus-style mix.
  • Family Tree: Propagation is by division or offsets once mature.
  • Space Needs: A baby now, but give serious room later; mature leaves are large and dramatic.
  • Speed: Fast in warm summer conditions, slow if cool.
  • Uninvited Guests: Watch for spider mites, thrips and aphids on new leaves.
  • Moving Day: Pot on during active growth when roots fill the pot.
  • Haircut: Cut away old yellow leaves at the base.
  • Fresh Air: Fresh warm airflow helps keep large leaves healthy.
  • Plant Lore: Pharaohs Mask is loved because the veins sit proud of the leaf surface, giving a sculptural, almost embossed look.
