Coffea arr., commonly known as the "Coffee Plant," is a tropical evergreen shrub native to tropical Africa and Asia. The plant is famous for its glossy, dark green leaves and its ability to produce coffee beans, making it a popular plant among coffee enthusiasts. Coffea arr. can be grown indoors or outdoors in tropical climates, and its delicate white flowers bloom in clusters, often followed by red or purple fruits that contain coffee beans. While it’s most known for its role in coffee production, it also serves as a stunning decorative plant due to its attractive foliage and unique growing habit.

  • Full Botanical Name: Coffea arr.

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate some direct sunlight, prolonged exposure to intense sun can scorch the leaves. Ideal for bright, shaded spots indoors or areas with dappled sunlight.
  • Ideal Room: Ideal for living rooms, kitchens, or offices with moderate light and humidity. It also thrives in humid environments such as bathrooms or kitchens, where it can benefit from natural moisture in the air.
  • Feeding: Fertilize once every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring to summer) with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer to promote healthy growth and foliage.
  • Humidity: Prefers high humidity, so misting the plant regularly or placing it on a humidity tray will help it thrive, especially in dry indoor environments.
  • Ideal Temperature: Best kept between 65°F and 75°F (18°C to 24°C). It can tolerate warmer temperatures but should be protected from cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
  • Watering: Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Coffea arr. prefers evenly moist soil but should not sit in water. Make sure the soil drains well to avoid root rot.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Non-toxic to pets and children, making it a safe choice for households with animals or young children.
  • Soil Type: Use a well-draining, organic potting mix, such as a general houseplant mix with added perlite or sand to improve drainage.
  • Propagation: Propagate by stem cuttings. Cut a healthy stem with a few leaves and root it in water or soil. Ensure that the cutting has a healthy node to promote successful rooting.
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Typically grows up to 6-10 feet (1.8-3 meters) tall when grown outdoors in optimal conditions, but indoors, it typically remains much smaller, growing up to 3-4 feet (90-120 cm) in height.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate-growing. It will grow steadily, producing new leaves and stems over time, particularly in the growing season.
  • Pests and Treatment: Generally resistant to pests, but may occasionally attract mealybugs, aphids, or scale. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil to prevent damage.
  • Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is only slightly larger than the current one to avoid water retention around the roots.
  • Pruning: Prune dead or damaged leaves regularly to maintain the plant’s appearance. You can also prune back leggy growth to encourage fuller foliage.
  • Air Purification: While not specifically known for air-purifying qualities, Coffea arr. contributes to a fresh and clean atmosphere, especially in areas where humidity levels are naturally high.
  • Folklore: The coffee plant is often associated with energy, growth, and productivity. In many cultures, the coffee bean is seen as a symbol of vitality, and the plant is often believed to bring positive energy into the home.
