Ceropegia woodii ‘Variegata’

Ceropegia woodii ‘Variegata’ is a beautifully marbled trailing succulent with pale pink, cream, and soft green heart-shaped leaves. Its delicate pastel tones and flowing vines make it a favourite for hanging pots and shelves. Easy-care, fast-growing, and endlessly charming, it’s a must-have for collectors who love elegant trailing plants.

  • Full Botanical Name: Ceropegia woodii ‘Variegata’
  • Common Names: Variegated String of Hearts, Pink String of Hearts
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: South Africa, Eswatini, Zimbabwe (variegata is a cultivated form)
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Grows in rocky, well-drained areas with bright light, warm temperatures, and long dry spells; naturally semi-succulent with tuberous roots for water storage

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Bright, indirect light for strongest variegation; can tolerate some gentle direct morning sun. Avoid harsh midday sun behind glass.
  • Ideal Room: Living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, or offices with bright windows; perfect for shelves or hanging planters
  • Feeding: Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a diluted succulent or balanced fertiliser.
  • Humidity: Prefers normal household humidity; avoid very humid, stagnant conditions as it increases rot risk.
  • Ideal Temperature: 18–27°C; avoid temperatures below 12°C.
  • Watering: Allow soil to dry 70–90% before watering. Water sparingly in winter. Overwatering is the most common cause of decline.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Generally considered non-toxic (genus level), but ingestion may still cause mild stomach upset. Keep hanging or out of reach.
  • Soil Type: Fast-draining cactus/succulent soil with added perlite or pumice
  • Propagation: Extremely easy—propagate from cuttings, nodes, or tubers placed on top of moist soil or in water
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Vines up to 1–2 metres long; compact root system suits small pots
  • Growth Rate: Fast in warm, bright conditions; variegated forms grow slightly slower than green forms
  • Pests and Treatment: Occasionally attracts mealybugs or aphids; treat with neem oil or plant-safe insecticide
  • Repotting: Every 1–2 years; prefers slightly root-bound conditions
  • Pruning: Trim long or leggy vines to encourage fuller growth; use cuttings for propagation
  • Air Purification: Mild; main appeal is ornamental elegance and trailing form
  • Folklore: Often called the “string of hearts” due to its romantic leaf shape—many see it as a symbol of affection and emotional connection
