Meet Ceropegia woodii 'Variegata'—the dainty trailing String of Hearts with marbled cream, sage and blush-pink leaves. Each slender vine carries pairs of little hearts, often with a purple underside, while brighter light can deepen the pink tones. She's a lovely choice for a hanging pot or the edge of a sunny shelf.

  • The Formal Name: Ceropegia woodii 'Variegata' (sold as Ceropegia linearis woodii Variegata)
  • The Nickname: Variegated String of Hearts
  • Roots: A variegated cultivated form of a tuber-forming trailing succulent native to southern Africa.
  • Natural Vibe: Open, bright conditions and sharply drained soil; her small tubers store water between drinks.

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Sunlight: Plenty of bright indirect light and a little gentle morning or evening sun help maintain her cream and pink colouring; avoid scorching midday sun behind glass.
  • Best Room: Hang near an east- or bright west-facing window, with space for the long vines to cascade.
  • Snacks: Feed lightly at half strength every 4–6 weeks during active spring and summer growth.
  • Tropical Feels: Ordinary indoor humidity is ideal; there is no need to mist the vines.
  • Cosy Factor: Aim for roughly 16–26°C; keep away from frost and cold winter window glass.
  • Thirst: Let most of the potting mix dry between thorough waterings, then drain fully. Give much less water in a cool, dark UK winter; shrivelling hearts are a better cue than a fixed calendar.
  • Safety First: Keep out of reach of pets that chew plants; the vines and tiny leaves are not intended as food.
  • The Bedding: Use an airy, peat-free succulent mix lightened with pumice, grit or perlite; good drainage is essential around the tubers.
  • Family Tree: Root short stem cuttings with nodes, or pin naturally produced aerial tubers against damp, airy compost.
  • Space Needs: Fine trailing vines can extend well beyond the pot; coil some back onto the surface for a fuller crown.
  • Speed: Moderate in warm, bright months; variegated growth can be slower than the all-green form.
  • Uninvited Guests: Inspect vine junctions and the soil line for mealybugs; remove small infestations manually.
  • Moving Day: Repot only when the pot is crowded, preferably in spring, without burying the tubers too deeply.
  • Haircut: Trim overly long or bare vines and use healthy pieces for cuttings.
  • Fresh Air: Normal gentle air movement is welcome, but avoid placing the fine vines in a cold draught.
  • Plant Lore: Small bead-like tubers may develop along the stems—each one offers a natural chance to make another plant.
