This Sarracenia mix features a selection of hardy North American pitcher plants elegantly displayed in a modern square glass vase. With upright tubular traps, vibrant colours, and dramatic veining, this arrangement is both a natural insect-catcher and a striking botanical centrepiece. Perfect for bright kitchens, offices, and sunny windowsills, it brings a true wild-bog aesthetic indoors.

  • Full Botanical Name: Sarracenia spp. (mixed species & hybrids)
  • Common Names: North American Pitcher Plant, Trumpet Pitcher, Bog Pitcher Plant
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Eastern & Southeastern United States (species dependent)
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Found in nutrient-poor bogs and wetlands with full sun, consistently wet soil, and cool to warm temperate climates

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Requires very bright light with 4–6 hours of direct sun daily. Without strong light, pitchers may become weak or fail to form.
  • Ideal Room: Sunny kitchens, bright windowsills, conservatories, or south-facing rooms with direct sunlight
  • Feeding: No fertiliser needed—Sarracenia catch insects naturally. Pitchers fill with digestive enzymes to feed the plant.
  • Humidity: Prefers moderate humidity but tolerant of household conditions if watering is correct.
  • Ideal Temperature: 15–28°C in the growing season; requires a cool winter dormancy at 2–10°C for 3–4 months.
  • Watering: Keep substrate consistently wet using rainwater, distilled water, or RO water only. The glass vase should maintain a small water reservoir at the base. Never allow the soil to dry out.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Non-toxic (genus level) — pitchers are harmless to pets and children; ingestion of plant material may cause mild stomach upset.
  • Soil Type: Carnivorous plant mix such as peat moss and perlite (no fertiliser, compost, or standard potting soil). Sand may be included for structure.
  • Propagation: Division of rhizomes during repotting; some hybrids can also be grown from seed
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Pitchers range from 15–40 cm indoors depending on species; clumps widen over time
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; faster in strong sun and pure water
  • Pests and Treatment: May attract aphids, mealybugs, or scale; treat gently with carnivorous-safe methods or insecticidal soap
  • Repotting: Every 1–2 years; carefully remove plants from the vase and refresh with appropriate substrate
  • Pruning: Remove brown or dried pitchers to keep the display tidy and encourage new growth
  • Air Purification: Moderate; valued more for insect control and dramatic appearance
  • Folklore: Sarracenia have long been associated with protection and guardianship due to their insect-catching nature—believed to “guard the home” by keeping pests in check
