Caladium is a tropical plant renowned for its large, colorful, heart-shaped leaves that come in various shades of red, pink, white, and green. Native to South America, particularly Brazil, Caladiums are often used in landscaping and as houseplants due to their vibrant foliage. Known for their ease of care and dramatic effect, Caladiums make a stunning addition to gardens, patios, or indoor spaces where they can be kept in bright, indirect light and high humidity.

  • Full Botanical Name: Caladium
  • Common Names: Elephant Ear, Angel Wings
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Native to South America, particularly Brazil and surrounding tropical regions
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Grows in tropical rainforests, typically in the shaded understory where it thrives in high humidity and well-draining, organic-rich soils.

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate lower light conditions, the vibrant colors of its leaves will be most pronounced with adequate light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the delicate leaves, so it's best to place it in filtered light.
  • Ideal Room: Ideal for living rooms, bathrooms, or kitchens with high humidity. It works well in containers or as a feature plant where it can receive the proper light and humidity levels.
  • Feeding: Fertilize once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer. Reduce feeding during the fall and winter months when growth slows.
  • Humidity: Prefers high humidity, typical of its native tropical environment. Regular misting, using a humidity tray, or placing the plant in a room with a humidifier will help maintain moisture levels for optimal growth.
  • Ideal Temperature: Best kept between 65°F and 75°F (18°C to 24°C). Protect from temperatures below 50°F (10°C), as it is sensitive to cold drafts and frost.
  • Watering: Water regularly when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. Keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure the plant has good drainage to allow excess water to escape.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Toxic to pets (cats and dogs) and children if ingested, so handle with care and keep out of reach of animals and young children.
  • Soil Type: Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix that retains moisture while allowing excess water to drain away. A mix designed for tropical plants or aroids works well for Caladium species.
  • Propagation: Propagate by dividing the tubers (bulbs) during the dormant season. Each tuber should have at least one eye or growing point. Allow the cut surface to callous over before planting in fresh, well-draining soil.
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Typically grows up to 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) tall with a spread of about 12-24 inches (30-60 cm). It forms a bushy growth habit with large, colorful leaves that make it a statement plant in any space.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate-growing. Caladiums are typically seasonal, growing vigorously during the warmer months and becoming dormant in winter. The growth slows significantly during the fall and winter months.
  • Pests and Treatment: Generally pest-resistant, but may occasionally attract aphids, spider mites, or scale insects. Treat infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap to keep the plant healthy.
  • Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is 1-2 inches larger than the current one and ensure it has good drainage to promote healthy root growth.
  • Pruning: Prune dead or yellowing leaves regularly to maintain a tidy appearance. Pruning can also help control the plant’s size and encourage fuller growth from the base.
  • Air Purification: Like many tropical plants, Caladium helps improve indoor air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, making it a beneficial addition to your home or office.
  • Folklore: Caladiums are often associated with vitality, beauty, and good fortune. Their bright, colorful leaves are seen as symbols of happiness and are thought to bring positive energy to the home.
