Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. An east-facing window is ideal.
  • Ideal Room: Suitable for living rooms, offices, or any space with ample natural light.
  • Feeding: Fertilize monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength.
  • Humidity: Prefers high humidity levels, ideally above 60%. Use a humidifier or place the plant on a humidity tray to maintain moisture.
  • Ideal Temperature: Best kept between 15°C and 30°C (59°F to 86°F). Protect from drafts and sudden temperature changes.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Toxic to pets and children. Keep out of reach to prevent ingestion.
  • Soil Type: Use a well-draining, airy potting mix rich in organic matter. A mix designed for aroids or orchids is suitable.
  • Propagation: Propagate by stem cuttings with at least one node. Place the cutting in water or moist soil until roots develop.
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Can grow up to 20 to 40 cm tall with a spread of 20 to 40 cm.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; may take several years to reach full size.
  • Pests and Treatment: Watch for aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
  • Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Use a pot 1–2 inches larger in diameter than the current one.
  • Pruning: Remove dead or yellowing leaves to maintain plant health and appearance.
  • Air Purification: Known to purify indoor air by removing toxins like formaldehyde.
  • Folklore: In some cultures, begonias are considered symbols of caution and are believed to ward off evil spirits.
