Meet Begonia maculata—the elegant cane Begonia with elongated olive-green leaves dusted in silver spots and flushed red beneath. Her upright bamboo-like stems give the plant a graceful shape, and established plants can carry dangling sprays of pale pink or white flowers. She is a foliage favourite with just the right amount of drama.

  • The Formal Name: Begonia maculata
  • The Nickname: Polka Dot Begonia
  • Roots: A cane-forming Begonia species native to Brazil.
  • Natural Vibe: Filtered woodland light, airy soil and consistent—but never sodden—moisture.

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Sunlight: Bright filtered light is best for firm stems and crisp spots; shield from hot midday sun that can scorch the foliage.
  • Best Room: An east-facing window or bright bathroom with steady warmth and no strong draughts.
  • Snacks: Feed lightly every 2–4 weeks during active spring and summer growth; pause in winter.
  • Tropical Feels: Appreciates moderate to high humidity with good airflow; avoid leaving the patterned leaves wet for long periods.
  • Cosy Factor: Aim for roughly 18–24°C and avoid dropping below around 15°C for long.
  • Thirst: Allow the top couple of centimetres of compost to dry before watering through and draining. Do not allow the entire root ball to stay bone-dry or sit in water.
  • Safety First: Begonias contain oxalates and are harmful if eaten by cats or dogs; keep out of reach.
  • The Bedding: A light peat-free houseplant mix with perlite and fine bark that retains some moisture but drains well.
  • Family Tree: Root sections of healthy cane with nodes in water or a suitable propagation medium; leaf-only pieces are unreliable for cane Begonias.
  • Space Needs: Canes can reach around a metre indoors; stake or tip-prune to keep a fuller shape.
  • Speed: Steady in warmth with good light, slower in winter.
  • Uninvited Guests: Inspect young shoots for thrips, mealybugs or aphids; isolate affected plants and remove pests manually first.
  • Moving Day: Repot in spring when the root ball fills its container, avoiding an oversized wet pot.
  • Haircut: Pinch or shorten leggy canes just above a node to encourage branching; remove tired leaves cleanly.
  • Fresh Air: Provide gentle airflow around the leaves to lower the risk of mildew without exposing her to cold draughts.
  • Plant Lore: The silver spots are part of the leaf pattern, not a sign of pests or water marks; the deep red undersides make this plant special from every angle.
