Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh direct sun which can scorch the long leaves.
  • Ideal Room: Bathrooms, living rooms, warm kitchens, greenhouse cabinets, or plant rooms with good humidity.
  • Feeding: Balanced liquid fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during spring–summer; reduce feeding in winter.
  • Humidity: Prefers high humidity (70–85%). Leaves may crisp in dry air.
  • Ideal Temperature: 20–27°C; protect from drafts and temperatures below 16°C.
  • Watering: Keep the soil slightly moist but never soggy. Allow the top 2–3 cm to dry before watering again.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Toxic (genus level) — contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that cause significant oral irritation, swelling, drooling, and vomiting if ingested by pets or humans.
  • Soil Type: A chunky, airy, epiphytic aroid mix with orchid bark, perlite/pumice, and coco coir or sphagnum.
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings or division of basal offshoots; ensure nodes are present.
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Leaves can reach 1–2 meters in length; plant remains narrow and upright at the base.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; faster in high humidity and warm temperatures.
  • Pests and Treatment: May attract thrips, spider mites, and mealybugs. Treat promptly with neem oil or systemic insecticide.
  • Repotting: Every 1–2 years or when roots begin escaping the pot; prefers to be slightly snug.
  • Pruning: Remove damaged or yellowing leaves at the base to encourage fresh growth.
  • Air Purification: Good; helps improve indoor air quality.
  • Folklore: Strap-leaf Anthuriums are often associated with elegance and flow, symbolising harmony and balance due to their ribbon-like foliage.
