Anthurium ‘Pink Blush’ is a velvet leaf Anthurium hybrid prized for its soft, heart-shaped foliage that emerges in shades of blush pink before maturing to deep green with contrasting pale veins. The velvety texture and gentle colour transition give it a romantic, high-end look, making it a standout foliage plant for collectors and modern interiors.

  • Full Botanical Name: Anthurium hybrid ‘Pink Blush’ (velvet leaf)
  • Common Names: Pink Blush Velvet Anthurium, Velvet Leaf Anthurium
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Hybrid cultivar; parent species originate from Central and South American tropical forests
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Parent species grow as epiphytes or terrestrials in warm, humid rainforests with bright, filtered light and airy, organic-rich substrates

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Bright, indirect light to keep leaves velvety and richly coloured. Avoid direct sun which can scorch the delicate velvet surface.
  • Ideal Room: Humid living spaces such as bathrooms, kitchens, plant rooms, or a greenhouse cabinet near a bright window.
  • Feeding: Use a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows.
  • Humidity: High humidity (65–85%) is ideal. Brown edges or tips usually indicate air that is too dry.
  • Ideal Temperature: 18–27°C. Keep away from cold draughts and avoid temperatures below 16°C.
  • Watering: Keep the mix lightly moist. Allow the top 2–3 cm of substrate to dry between waterings and never leave the roots sitting in water.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Toxic (genus level) — Anthuriums contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals which can cause mouth and throat irritation, drooling, swelling, and vomiting if chewed or ingested by pets or humans. Handle with care and keep out of reach of children and animals.
  • Soil Type: Chunky, well-aerated aroid mix with orchid bark, perlite or pumice, and coco coir or peat to mimic its natural epiphytic conditions.
  • Propagation: Division of basal offshoots or stem cuttings with at least one node and healthy root growth.
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Typically 40–60 cm tall and 30–45 cm wide in home conditions.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; new leaves flush pink before gradually turning green as they mature.
  • Pests and Treatment: Watch for thrips, spider mites, and mealybugs, which favour velvet foliage. Treat early with neem oil, insecticidal soap, or an appropriate systemic product.
  • Repotting: Every 1–2 years or when roots circle the pot. Refresh substrate to maintain good aeration.
  • Pruning: Remove yellowing or damaged leaves at the base to encourage fresh growth and maintain a tidy shape.
  • Air Purification: Good; like many aroids, it helps reduce some indoor airborne pollutants while providing lush, decorative foliage.
  • Folklore: Velvet Anthuriums are often associated with luxury and emotional warmth; the soft pink flush of ‘Pink Blush’ is sometimes seen as symbolising affection, comfort, and calm.
