Anthurium magnificum is a breathtaking velvet-leaf Anthurium admired for its large, heart-shaped foliage, thick veining, and luxurious texture. Its deep green quilted leaves with contrasting pale veins create a dramatic, sculptural presence, making it one of the most sought-after velvet aroids in modern plant collections.

  • Full Botanical Name: Anthurium magnificum
  • Common Names: Magnificum Anthurium, Velvet Anthurium
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Colombia
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Terrestrial–epiphytic aroid found in tropical cloud forests; thrives in warm temperatures, high humidity, and bright, filtered light

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal to maintain strong veining and large leaf size. Avoid direct sunlight which can scorch the velvet texture.
  • Ideal Room: Warm living rooms, bathrooms, plant rooms, greenhouse cabinets, or any space with stable humidity.
  • Feeding: Use a diluted balanced fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during active growth (spring–summer).
  • Humidity: Requires high humidity (65–85%). Low humidity may cause brown leaf edges or reduced growth.
  • Ideal Temperature: 18–27°C; protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 16°C.
  • Watering: Keep soil lightly moist. Allow the top 2–3 cm to dry between waterings. Avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Toxic (genus level) — contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that cause mouth and throat irritation, swelling, drooling, and vomiting if ingested by pets or humans.
  • Soil Type: Chunky, well-aerated aroid mix with orchid bark, pumice, perlite, and coco coir to support epiphytic roots.
  • Propagation: Stem division, node cuttings, or separating basal pups (depending on growth form).
  • Eventual Height and Spread: 60–120 cm tall; leaves can reach 40–60 cm wide under ideal conditions.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; faster in higher humidity and warmth.
  • Pests and Treatment: Watch for thrips, spider mites, and mealybugs. Treat promptly with neem oil or a systemic insecticide.
  • Repotting: Every 1–2 years to refresh soil and support expanding roots.
  • Pruning: Remove yellowing or damaged leaves to encourage healthy new growth.
  • Air Purification: Good; contributes to improved indoor air quality.
  • Folklore: Velvet Anthuriums are often associated with luxury, protection, and grounding due to their bold, heart-shaped leaves and deep colouring.
