Anthurium DocBlock Dark & Handsome® ‘9’ × Zara® ‘33’ is a powerful, high-contrast velvet Anthurium hybrid that fuses the inky depth and refined surface of Dark & Handsome® with the bold scale, structure, and venation typical of the Zara® line. The result is a commanding plant with broad, muscular leaves, intense saturation, and a luxurious velvet finish—designed for collectors who favour presence and authority in their specimens.

  • Full Botanical Name: Anthurium (DocBlock hybrid) Dark & Handsome® ‘9’ × Zara® ‘33’
  • Common Names: DocBlock Dark & Handsome × Zara Hybrid Anthurium
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Hybrid; parent genetics derived from Central American Anthurium species
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Parent species grow epiphytically or terrestrially in warm, humid tropical forests with filtered light and constant airflow

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Bright, indirect light; avoid direct sun to preserve velvet texture and prevent leaf scorch.
  • Ideal Room: Plant rooms, greenhouse cabinets, warm interiors with stable humidity
  • Feeding: Diluted balanced aroid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during active growth
  • Humidity: High humidity (65–85%) recommended to maintain leaf size, finish, and depth of colour
  • Ideal Temperature: 20–27°C; avoid temperatures below 16°C and cold drafts
  • Watering: Keep substrate lightly moist; allow the top 2–3 cm to dry slightly between waterings. Never allow waterlogging.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Toxic (genus level) — contains calcium oxalate crystals that may cause irritation if ingested
  • Soil Type: Very chunky, well-aerated aroid mix with bark, perlite, pumice, and sphagnum moss
  • Propagation: Stem division or node cuttings; slow and best done on established plants
  • Eventual Height and Spread: 55–85 cm tall; 45–70 cm wide depending on maturity and conditions
  • Growth Rate: Slow to moderate; leaf size and visual impact increase steadily with age
  • Pests and Treatment: Thrips and spider mites are the main concerns; maintain humidity and inspect foliage regularly
  • Repotting: Every 1–2 years once rootbound; avoid oversized pots
  • Pruning: Remove older or damaged leaves at the base to direct energy into new growth
  • Air Purification: Good; contributes positively to indoor air quality
  • Folklore: Dark & Handsome® × Zara® hybrids symbolise authority and prestige, representing depth, power, and elite craftsmanship within the highest tier of Anthurium collections
